Squire’s Castle sits quietly among wooded trails in the North Chagrin Reservation, offering visitors a striking glimpse into the past. The stone structure was commissioned in the late nineteenth century by industrialist Feargus B. Squire, who envisioned it as an entrance lodge to an expansive estate that was never realized. Unlike a true castle, the building functioned as a gatehouse and caretaker’s residence rather than a fortified home. Its rugged stonework, arched openings, and tower-like corners give it an old-world appearance that contrasts with the surrounding forest. After Squire’s plans were abandoned, the property eventually became part of the Cleveland Metroparks system. Time and weather have stripped the interior down to bare walls, leaving an open shell that invites exploration.
