Squire’s Castle is a historic stone gatehouse located in North Chagrin Reservation in Willoughby Hills, Ohio. Built in the 1890s for Standard Oil executive Feargus B. Squire, it was intended to serve as the entrance to a grand estate that was never completed. The castle’s distinctive stone walls, arched windows, and tower give it a medieval appearance. Squire and his wife originally envisioned the property as a peaceful country retreat away from Cleveland. However, their plans for the estate were eventually abandoned, leaving the gatehouse standing on its own. The Cleveland Metroparks later acquired the property and incorporated it into the reservation. Today, Squire’s Castle is a popular destination for visitors, hikers, and photographers. Its architecture stands out against the surrounding woodland, creating a striking scene in every season. Autumn brings changing leaves and warm colors, while winter snow highlights the rugged stonework. The nearby trails and picnic areas make the location a favorite spot for outdoor recreation. Although the mansion it was designed to accompany was never built, Squire’s Castle remains a memorable local landmark and a glimpse into an ambitious vision from Cleveland’s past.
