Teachers must have interactive lessons for their students. When a student is engaged, they are more likely to remember the lesson more and will succeed in understanding the concept. If a teacher is to only lecture, students will tune them out and do other things such as other homework, talk to others, or sleep. Since they did not participate in the lesson, they will have a hard time recalling the points the teacher lectured on.
I see how ineffective lecturing is in my own classes. Many of my classmates who dislike school say its simply because it's boring and they would rather be doing anything else. If high school teachers would do more activities instead of displaying the notes on our smart boards and talking, a lot more students would be interested and grades would increase dramatically. Many of my classmates favorite teachers use interactive lessons and students tend to respect them more as well because they know they care about their students learning.
All teachers must have personal teaching efficacy, or the belief that they can promote learning in all students, regardless or background. If a teacher is passionate about teaching, it rubs off on the students. Students with an excited teacher will want to participate more and be enthusiastic about lessons. If a student has a boring teacher who only lectures, they aren't going to want to be in that class. Teachers also need to have high collective efficacy, the teacher's belief in their schools. Teachers who have school pride and enjoy their work environment are going to be more likely to have a positive attitude when it comes to teaching.
There are many distractions in a school that can leaves students uneasy and unfocused. With keeping a safe classroom, students would enjoy being at school. Things such as bullying and fighting, can cause students to fear going into the classroom. Not only does the classroom need these things, but other areas where students gather such as the cafeteria, gym, and commons area. When monitoring any of these areas, teachers need to be on a lookout for negative behavior and stop it before it gets any worse.
As a teacher, I need to enforce classroom rules and create strong emotional relationships. On the first day of school, I would create a set of rules with the class so they know what is expected and also to get their opinions on rules they would like to have. Also, I will need to watch out for bullying or hurtful comments because when kids don't feel welcome, they won't do well in their classes. With these things, I would be able to have a classroom where everyone feels safe and welcomed.
