I think that an engaging and wide array of instructional strategies will create a learning environment where they want to come in and learn. Here are 2 of the ways I will teach to my students.
I love the idea of setting up several stations for students to learn the material, rehearse it, and explore more about the topic on their own. I would set up 3-4 stations: 1 with me where I would go over notes, 1 with a partner assignment to help them further know the concept, and the last station would be another assignment that is hands-on and engaging to be worked on independently. I think this is a great way for students to be interactive with me and other classmates while also learning at their own pace.
For this strategy, I would split my class into groups and assign them a part of the lesson to read and take notes on. When they have completed that, it is their job to make a presentation and teach the rest of the class their section. During their work time I would make sure they are getting all the right material down. After they have presented to the class, we will have a discussion where I can add information if I want to and the students can ask questions and share comments about the topic. I think this is a great thing to do in high school classrooms because it teaches the students responsibility since they need to know the material and also helps their public speaking abilities.
This short video summarizes what my goals are for my students when it comes to their learning.
