Planning for Differentiated Instruction – The competent teacher plans and designs instruction based on content area knowledge, diverse student characteristics, student performance data, curriculum goals, and the community context. The teacher plans for ongoing student growth and achievement.
Rationale: I created a mathematics lesson plan taking into consideration: diverse learners, students prior knowledge, performance data, learning objectives and prior assessment data. The lesson is on "Subtraction between 10 or less", and designed for a 1st grade class. The instructional plan format is as follows: Engage, Connect and Launch.
Connection To IPTS Standard: When I planned and designed the lesson plan I took into consideration Standard 3 goals. I planned for Differentiated Instruction to aid the learning process of all diverse learners. I planned in accordance with curriculum goals, performance and assessment data and for active learning to take place.
Self-Evaluation: I learned that in order for learning to take place , we need to address social emotional behavior. I realized that proper planning and support for diverse learners is crucial. It is important to establish guidelines as to how the class discussion will take effect. Proper turn taking during whole class discussion is crucial because not only the most vocal students will participate and benefit but also those students who might need extra time to reassure their response is correct before sharing. Moderate support must be given to the student in order for them to accomplish the objective that has been targeted. Support needs to be provided in order for the students to not become frustrated and learn productively. The activity begins independent or with the teachers support depending on the need and level of understanding of the two previous activities. The goal is for the activity to start with guidance and for that need of guidance to diminish as much as possible. Support should be available as needed.

"Las Posadas" Social-Studies/ Christmas Around The World Lesson
Rationale: I created a lesson on "Christmas in Mexico" to complement our "Christmas Around The World" study. I used this lesson as a closing and culminating lesson because around 80% of students in the classroom are of Mexican origin and most had limited knowledge on how Christmas is celebrated in Mexico. The lesson consisted of Prior knowledge sharing, literature, writing, a hands on craft and breaking a pinata. It was a long lesson that was divided in three sessions through one school day.
Connection To IPTS Standard: When I planned the activities for the culmination of the unit study plan , I considered the students community context and background. I planned for Differentiated Instruction to aid the learning process of all diverse learners. I planned in accordance with curriculum goals, performance and assessment data and for active learning to take place.
Self-Evaluation: Whole class discussion embraces a unique learning experience because children are able to recall, share and learn from their peers. It is important to establish guidelines as to how the class discussion will take effect. Proper turn taking during whole class discussion is crucial because not only the most vocal students will participate and benefit but also those students who might need extra time to reassure their response is correct before sharing. The culminating activities were a success, the children were engaged and active during the different activities.
