Searches are tricky business, persons may often feel violated and abused after a search that they feel is against their own will or unfair. That's why we at the Los Angeles Police Department try our best to make it as fair and convenien as possible.
Person search:
To frisk a person, one following criteria must be met:
Be suspected of a crime due to a report of a crime, or
Be suspected of a crime due to a Officers suspicion of a crime based on plain view evidence of witness statement, or
The smell presence of illegale substances, or substances not compatible while driving a vehicle detected by the Officers or K9-Police Dog's nose or by electrical scent device.
A person search must be executied with the utmost professionalism and always with synthetic gloves to ensure no evidence is tainted. A person must be ordered to spread their arms and legs. For the safety of the Officer they must ask if the person is carrying any dangerous objects like sharp needles, knives or weapons and take precaution. All places on their body covered by clothing must be patted down to feel objects that mey be underneath the clothing.
Vehicle search:
To search a vehicle, one of the following criteria must be met:
Be belonging to a detained or arrested suspect, or
Be stationary in reasonable distance of a crime scene to be linked to said crime, or
Have illegal substances inside the vehicle, or
The smell presence of illegal substances detectived by the Officer or K9-Police dog's nose or electrical scent device, or
Be locaded on a lot that has been searched prior to the Search of the Vehicle.
A search must be conducted with synthetic gloves to ensure no evidence is tainted, furthermore, the vehicle is to be closed and or locked in the case no evidence is found, if evidence is found the vehicle be impounded and taken in for evidence.
Residence, Private Business or Lot:
To search a Residence, Private Business or Lot the following criteria must be met:
Suspected imminent escape of suspect, or
Suspected imminent danger, or
Suspicion that evidences faces imminent destruction, or
Be the scene of a crime, or be in a reasonably close vicinity of a crime, or
The smell of the presence of illegal substances detectived by the Officer or K9-Police dog's nose or by electrical scent device.
A search is to be conducted by no less than one Officer to ensure the safety of said Officer except in the case of imminent danger to a Civilian. Furthermore searches are to be conducted using synthetic gloves to ensure no evidence is tainted.
