Importance of classroom management
Importance of classroom management
Social and emotional development
Effective classroom management enables the teacher to focus on the social and emotional development of the learner as much as teaching and learning.
The teacher must possess "skills that help children to successfully cope in different situations, gain self-confidence, understand their own advantages and shortcomings, and to make the best possible decisions" ("Why is classroom management important?| Allison Academy ", 2022)
Thus, when the emotional and social systems of a learner are addressed it will directly impact their school performance and also their life in the general.
Respect between the teacher and learner
As a teacher, boundaries need to be set. You are the teacher, your authority holds more power.
This so as to create a safe environment, eliminate time wasters and model good behaviour.
Therefore, respect can be established through the creation of classroom rules that are equal and fair to all.
Furthermore, the manner in which learners communicate with each other needs to be addressed to reinforce respect.
To get respect, you need to give respect.
Hence, the teacher needs to respect the learners so as to get the respect back. Mutual respect is of utmost importance.
Models behaviour in the classroom
This is the key component of classroom management.
This is because classroom management aims to reduce misbehaviour.
When learners know and understand how they should behave in the classroom through rules and consequences, it will limit misbehaviour.
Additionally, how the teacher behaves directly affects how the learners behave. This is because learners are most likely to imitate how you behave and think that it is the correct manner in which they should also behave.
Therefore, the teacher must always be mindful of how they behave in the classroom.
