SHOW YOUR STUDENTS THAT YOU CARE
Showing your students that you care about them is critical to building strong relationships and sets the foundation for trust, mutual respect and cooperation
You can show your students that you care by:
°Listening to students and ask questions to show that you are interested in their lives and learners love attention so focusing your attention on each students throughout the week and listen to what they have to say is important.
Consider your student’s perspectives
As a teacher you should try to put yourself in your learner’s shoes to understand their experiences better, as this will help you address the root cause of issues and problem behaviour to better address their needs.
Questions to ask yourself when working with a student
°What is the classroom like for this learner
°Does the learner believe you care about them
°How do you think the learner feels about you
°What factors from outside do you think play a role in the learner’s behaviour
Asking yourself these questions as a teacher will reveal to you’re a way in which you can solve certain issues and how you can assist learners and working on those issues with them will make learners feel like they matter and will have a positive impact on your relationship with them.
Develop mutual trust
-Mutual trust is very important to have and to maintain in every relationship. And that includes with your learners.
Here are few ways to develop mutual trust with your learners:
°Share a few things about your life outside of the classroom doing this learners might start to see that you are a real person and making them feel valued because you opened up to them
°Grant your students opportunities to make choices as often as you can
°Always act in your learner’s best interests
PRACTICE CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM
-Establishing clear guidelines and consequences, you are creating a fair environment where students are treated with respect and know what is expected of them
Here are a few tips for practicing constructive discipline:
°Be respectful because losing your temper and harshly punishing a learners harms your relationship rather look for a consequence that is fair and meaningful
°Involve learners when establishing class rules
°Be mindful of equity in your discipline and corrective behaviour
