Historically mathematics has been taught the same, practice and drill with paper and pencil but there needs to be a change and some math teachers are embracing the change. Math students need to understand why they are learning the math and be able apply it to their lives so they see purpose in learning and retaining what they have learned. Teaching mathematics needs to turn towards exploration and real world application so students can make connections to the topics they are learning and technology can give access to exploration in math classrooms. With this new approach to learning math with exploration, students should be able to answer for themselves, "why do I need to learn this?"
