Our StarSkate program is for skaters who have completed their Star 1 assessments and are working on their Star 2 assessments and higher. Lessons are not included in the registration fee for this program which means that parents will pay a private coach for lessons. Cheryle and Fallis team coach and work with all of our StarSkaters and the number of lessons a skater receives is based on parent budget, goals, and time of the season.
Sometimes sessions are split with Star 2-4 skaters on the ice together and Star 5+ skaters on the ice together. This ensures that all skaters get adequate lesson time based on their level.
In the StarSkate program, skaters work through assessments in a variety of disciplines such as: Freeskate Elements, Freeskate Program, Skills, Dance, Artistic, and Synchro. All assessments have a $12 fee that is paid directly to Skate Canada.
Star 1-5 Assessments are done during a regular skating practice. When coaches decide a skater is ready for an assessment, they will let them and the parents know. Some assessments will require the skater to wear more formal attire (like a skating dress or pants) while others can be done in practice attire. Star 1-5 assessments include Freeskate Elements, Freeskate Programs, Skills, Dances, Synchro (2, 3, 4), and Artistic (5).
Star 6-Gold Assessments are usually done at an Assessment Day. Like a competition, skaters show up to the assessment day in their formal skating attire where an outside evaluator assesses them. However, Coach Fallis is a qualified skating skills evaluator which means that ALL skating skills assessments (Star 1-Gold) can be done on a regular skating session. Star 6-Gold assessments include Freeskate Elements, Freeskate Programs, Skills, Dances, and Artistic (7, 9, Gold).
A full list of Skate Canada's assessments can be found here.
There are competitions for all levels of figure skating in Nova Scotia. Skaters often start their competitive journey at a Star1-3 or Star 1-4 event. These events have skaters do their program (or elements if they are in Star 1) in front of a panel of judges where they are evaluated to a Bronze, Silver, or Gold standard. All skaters leave the event with their report card and a ribbon. In Star 4, skaters get their report card with their ratings but are also ranked against their competitors.
Once skaters reach Star 5 in competition, they are able to compete at other events such as SkateNS Fall Skate, Rob McCall Memorial, SkateNS Provincial Championships, and the Atlantic Championships (qualification only). Skaters and parents will discuss with the coaches what events they will do.
Depending on age and skill level, skaters may also compete in the Competitive Stream. These categories are also at our local and provincial competitions but skaters can get a chance to qualify for national level competitions (Pre-Novice and above).
When attending a competition, there are fees that will be billed from the coaches. These fees include coaching at the event, travel, hotel and food costs.
