Our Junior program is for skaters who are working on their stage 4 - 6 badges of the CanSkate program. They are in this program because they have completed stage 3 of CanSkate or been recommended by a coach and are interested in figure skating (figure skates are required for this session).
Juniors will still work on their CanSkate skills but in a slightly different format. There is more time spent on edge, turn, and cross-cut development as well as jumps, spins, and field moves. Once skaters pass Stage 5 they are able to remove their helmet and once they pass Stage 6 they begin their StarSkate assessments.
Star 1 is the beginning of Skate Canada's StarSkate program. StarSkate offers skater's the opportunity to work on different disciplines of figure skating while completing assessments and having the opportunity to compete.
There are 3 assessments at the Star 1 level: Freeskate Elements (jumps and spins), Skills (edges, turns, stroking, and field moves), and Dance (ice dance elements). Once skaters pass these three assessments, they are ready to join our Star 2+ sessions. There is a $12 fee for each of these assessments paid directly to Skate Canada. Skaters are also able to start competing at Star 1 events throughout the province. This is a great way to have fun and meet new skaters!
Some skaters prefer to do a bridge option before moving into the Star 2+ program. These skaters will do their 60 minute Junior/Star 1 program and then 30 minutes on the Star 2+ program. This gives them a chance to get used to skating for 90 minutes and still have some group lesson opportunities.
