Johann Gotthelf Mühlberg

Johann Gotthelf Mühlberg

Johann Gotthelf Mühlberg was born in Roßwein, Saxony, Prussia on the 5th of May 1790 to Johann Gottlob Mühlberg and wife Eva Rosina Rost. Johann Gotthelf was baptised the next day at Roßwein Lutheran Church. The baptism was witnessed by Godparents Johanna Christiana and her father Gottlieb Rosts, gardeners; Johann Martin Paul, farmer and judge from Bodenbach (Bodenbach is 24 kms northeast of Leipzig); and Johann Gottfried Mühlberg, bachelor and gardener from Gleisberg (Gleisberg is 4 kms east-northeast of Roßwein). Later Johann Gottfried Mühlberg was recorded as living at Hartmannsdorf in Saxonian records (seven villages by this name exist in the region).

Roßwein and its river is described in the 1882 Gazetteer of the World:

Rosswein [Roßwein] – (ross’ŵin) a town of Saxony on the Freiberger Mulde, 5 miles (8 kms) W.N.W. of Nossen. Population: 6968. Manufactures woollen cloth. Mulde – (mŏŏl’deh) a river of Saxony, Prussia and Anhalt, rises in the Erzgebirge and after a N. course of 130 miles, joins the Elbe on the left at Dessau.

Roßwein is situated in Saxony on the Freiberger Mulde River, southeast of Leipzig and 40 kms south of Mühlberg on the River Elbe (Refer to map in ‘Mühlberg’ history). Roßwein is famous for its technical schools, in building, furniture making and iron mongering. Cloth making was flourishing industry there during 14th century. The crest of Roßwein reveals it’s meaning:

The arms are canting, showing a horse (Ross) in front of a grape (Wein=wine). The combination already appeared on a 14th century seal of the city. The colours are known since the 17th century and have not changed since. - Hartemink, Ralf (1997), 'German Civic Heraldry: Rosswein,' www.ngw.nl/int/dld/r/rosswein.htm

Johann Gotthelf Mühlberg’s trade was schumacher (boot maker), living together with wife Sophia Karoline Starke in Roßwein.

Following Sophia's death in 1844, Johann Gotthelf married Johanna Rosina Ehrlich on the 25th of April 1847 at Hirschfeld (near Nossen, 10 kms east of Roßwein).

Johann Gotthelf Mühlberg died on the 5th of January 1861 at Roßwein, age approx 70 having outlived four sons and one daughter. Johann was buried three days later in Roßwein.

It is thought that only Amalie along with her elder brother Carl Julius Mühlberg survived till adulthood. It is possible that she migrated to Wisconsin, USA. A marriage record exists between an ‘Amelia Muhlberg’ and Herman Tuscher on the 17th of May 1883. If this were Amalie Auguste Mühlberg, she would have been 39 at the time.
