The beginning of a season means that the bright eyed and bushy tailed drivers have the dream of holding the trophy and taking home a Gran Potato Cup Champion title. The biggest regulation change going into the year was a Traction Control System (TCS) handicap added to every event. This handicap helped to make the racing tighter than ever.
During the Q1 Event, Mike Hansen came in as a heavy favorite after dominating the competition last season by taking 95 points out of the maximum 100 points available. Things weren't gonna be as easy this season though as he failed to make a Grand Finals for the first time in his career. Cooper Bright & Jeff Meisenzahl duked it out with Cooper losing the first round of the Grand Finals, but able to regain his composure to win the second round and take home the first event win of the season.
In Q2, Hansen regained his regular driving performance and absolutely dominated the event by only needing 1 turn in each of his match ups to achieve victory. This was a first for the Gran Potato Cup and will be hard/close to impossible to replicate in the future.
Q3 brought more of the same for Hansen as he took out Stephen Trigueiro for the second event in the row during the Grand Finals. Although not as dominate as Q2, Hansen still finished the event with a perfect 4-0 match up record.
A new handicap of tire compounds was added for the Q4 Event and that really helped to shake things up. Greg McKeever took the most advantage of his handicap and drove the best he did all season, showing flashes of his early performances during the 2018 season. He took out Cooper in the Grand Finals to take his first event win in his career, but by finishing on the podium for a record 8th (and every) event in a row, Hansen takes home his second consecutive Gran Potato Cup Championship.
Completing the podium of the 2019 season, Cooper finished 2nd, and Stephen finished 3rd. Here is how the Championship Pool Payout was distributed:
1st Place - Mike Hansen: $147
2nd Place - Cooper Bright: $74
3rd Place - Stephen Trigueiro: $25
