In the winter of ’86, Drivin’ Brian Ackerson was born in the back of a 1967 Pontiac GTO, outside a Texaco station in Talladega, Alabama. Brian’s love of racing was evident from the first time his parents took him to the Talladega 500 in 1989. That’s when the precocious youngster literally drove his big-wheels out from the infield, out onto the track. He was rescued by an on-track firefighter that day, but that firefighter did nothing to extinguish his love of racing. Race announcers watching from above coined the nickname for the boy 'Drivin’ Brian', which stuck through his childhood. He went on to have a well-documented junior racing career - with big wins on smaller southern oval sprint tracks.
However, despite his success on ovals, his lack of success on road courses was equally well known - having never successfully completed a right turn, in a sanctioned race. That doesn’t appear to be slowing down Drivin’ Brian though. As he prepares for the 2018 Gran Potato Cup, he was asked about who he most admired. Drivin’ Brian answered, “Derek Zoolander. Derek overcame his fear of left turns to become the world’s top male model. I expect to be the Derek Zoolander of the driving world, and am prepared to overcome my fear and hoist the inaugural Gran Potato Cup.”
