Ms. Westenskow

My name is Heather Westenskow. That’s a long last name, so you can call me Mrs. W. I grew up in Salt Lake and most of my family is still here. I got my bachelor’s degree from Utah State University and my master’s degree in Elementary Reading and Literacy is from Walden University. I also have my ESL endorsement and I’m trying to learn Spanish this year.

I live with my husband and 11-year-old son in West Jordan. You will notice that I use a motorized scooter to get around the school. It’s not a mini car, but it can seem very cool! I have Muscular Dystrophy and standing for a long time or walking distances is difficult for me.

I love teaching 1st grade! We have so many exciting things to learn this year. We will learn how to be better readers and writers. We focus on sight words because they are SO important to helping us become successful readers. My little mathematicians will learn to read, write, and count numbers to 120. We will be adding and subtracting to 20, including within word problems. We will be scientists studying life cycles, physical science, Earth and space. Whew! This is such an important year!

Mi nombre es Heather Westenskow. Es un apellido largo, por lo que puede llamarme Sra. W. Crecí en Salt Lake y la mayor parte de mi familia todavía vive aquí. Obtuve mi licenciatura de la Universidad Estatal de Utah y mi maestría en Lectura y Alfabetización Primaria es de la Universidad de Walden. También tengo mi respaldo de ESL y estoy tratando de aprender español este año.

Vivo con mi esposo y mi hijo de 11 años en West Jordan. Notarás que uso un scooter motorizado para desplazarme por la escuela. No es un mini coche, ¡pero puede parecer genial! Tengo distrofia muscular y me resulta difícil estar de pie durante mucho tiempo o caminar distancias.

Me encanta enseñar 1er grado! Tenemos tantas cosas emocionantes que aprender este año. Aprenderemos a ser mejores lectores y escritores. Nos enfocamos en las palabras de uso frecuente porque son MUY importantes para ayudarnos a convertirnos en lectores exitosos. Mis pequeños matemáticos aprenderán a leer, escribir y contar números hasta 120. Estaremos sumando y restando hasta 20, incluso dentro de los problemas de palabras. Seremos científicos estudiando ciclos de vida, ciencias físicas, la Tierra y el espacio. ¡Uf! ¡Este es un año tan importante!
