Cindy Yuen-Zhe Chen’s works ‘Resonant Flows’ are explorations into the connection between the artist and the environment, specifically bodies of water (Parramatta River, Lane Cove River and Middle Harbour).
The markings in ‘Printing with rain: midnight’ and ‘Sonic ink vibrations’ are incredibly organic and pretty.
The way ‘Fluvial Dynamics’ occupies space was something I wanted to explore. Both Dean Cross and Chen suspend their works in the air, but most of Chen’s work remains on the ground, which makes it look very organic and rock-like.
Things I like:
The patterns created by the ink
The texture/materiality of the Wenzhou paper - it looks very thin and therefore malleable and soft-looking
The form of “Fluvial Dynamics’ combined with the contours of the 2D markings create a work with a lot of depth.

David Münnich’s ‘Notpron’, made in 2004, was an ARG (alternate reality game) that I stumbled across as the hardest puzzle game on the internet, it intrigued me and I would spend days on the riddles only to be sent to another, visually identical to the one I had just solved. The aesthetic of the game was simplistic yet so effective in its use of programming, user interface, and general “trickiness” in its riddles.

Things I liked:
Black background; it always makes you feel like you’re on an illegal/unmonitored website
On level 2 the site starts a very eerie song - this ARG is not meant to be scary, but the vastness/loneliness in being on the internet alone is quite frightening
Bright , default (easily legible) font that contrasts with the black bg. Being more of a technological constraint to produce an aesthetically pleasing site, notpron seems to embody “the bare minimum” in its visuals and that was something I really wanted to capture with the technology I have now (google sites).
The ARG leads you to: downloading audio files and images that you have to edit, changing URLs and looking at the site’s HTML versions.
The ending actually needs you to contact Münnich himself, as he has the answer. (when I played it, around 60-80 people had completed it - now it’s 100!)
Level one of notpron. You simply have to click on the door to enter, but as the levels progress, the puzzles get harder and harder.
“Notpron is an online puzzle game and internet riddle created in 2004 by German game developer David Münnich. It has been hailed by fans, journalists, and Münnich himself as "the hardest riddle available on the internet".”
I looked at Lawhead’s work for 4D but only recently invested my time into exploring her interactive sites, namely her entire portfolio. (link:http://alienmelon.com/)
Things I liked:
All the GIFs! It adds interest to the site so easily through repeated motions - sometimes they’re so integrated that you don’t even realise that there’s something moving.
You can move her ghost with arrow keys - this really emphasises that you’re playing a game and exploring something mischievous and cute (but it contrasts with the eerie music that plays at the beginning)
The MS paint-esque pixel art especially in the edge of the graveyard - really embodies old-school, personal project vibes
Tatghoul’s textboxes, having someone “talk” to you through pre-written text is something I want for my website
