Flashes of GIFs and the overfamiliar clicking of a computer mouse - with each GIF and each click, a new window opens: a new, anonymous user that falls into the endless pit of the internet. The famed imagery of the Windows XP desktop background accompanied by a reference to The Truman Show’s staircase scene, represents the importance of online culture, but also the reassurance that there is another world that we as consumers can return to (though the pre-eminence of the physical world can be debated).
Money and finance seem to go hand in hand with the modern era of the internet - the ever-present sound of jingling coins denotes the lasting bond between monetization and consumable media. Advertisements, online casinos; money is a bridge between the real and online world that is unavoidable.
A ‘blue screen of death’ terminates the video - though it differs from the sense of doom or frustration that is highly familiar to Windows users; as the sounds accompanying the image thanks the user, then clearing the screen with an optimistic trill.
I imagine this piece to be viewed on reflective LED screens, the blackness of the video at the beginning and end include the reflection viewers may see of themselves and their surroundings. Not to be seen as a condemnation of the internet, I attempted to represent the onlinescape we live in, crossing over into the physical world.
