About me
I am 4th-year Environmental Engineering student at Addis Ababa Science and Technology University and a part of an IETP group.
We met with our advisor to introduce ourselves, share our skills, and discuss our interests. After a brief orientation on IETP, we created a Telegram group for seamless communication. Our team discussed strengths and assigned everyone to brainstorm project ideas for the next meeting. I proposed the Advanced DIY Seed Planter with Smart Depth and Spacing Control, emphasizing its potential to improve sustainable farming practices.
Brainstorming and Shortlisting
Our team brainstormed six project ideas and voted anonymously using a poll in the Telegram group. Each member researched the shortlisted ideas, focusing on problems to solve, components, and objectives.
The three final ideas were:
Medication Dispensing IoT System
Tomato Powder Production and Drying Machine
Advanced DIY Seed Planter with Smart Depth and Spacing Control
We pitched these ideas to our advisor, who helped us finalize the Tomato Powder Production Machine due to its inclusivity across departments and alignment with the SDGs. While my seed planter idea wasn’t selected, I contributed valuable insights during the discussions.
Proposal Preparation
Our group began drafting the project proposal, assigning tasks based on our strengths. I was responsible for creating the project timeline and helping with parts of the objectives and problem statement. I ensured the timeline was realistic, considering all key milestones, and aligned with our advisor’s expectations.
After receiving feedback on our initial proposal draft, the team revised each section to address the comments. The group leader compiled the revised sections into a final draft, which was reviewed and submitted.
Lab Access and Experiments
An authorization letter secured lab access, allowing us to begin tomato drying experiments.
Material Selection and Cost Analysis
We discussed and finalized the materials required for the project, considering their sustainability and suitability. The electrical and mechanical members prepared a cost analysis, which was approved by our advisor. Funds were transferred, enabling efficient material procurement.
Prototype Development
We started assembling the prototype, though challenges with cutting sheet metal and RHS caused delays.
As the project came to a close, I reflected on my role in contributing ideas and ensuring the proposal’s timeline was realistic and effective
