A student ambassador who guides the class's reading recommendations and themed discussions
The role of the class reading ambassador empowers ready students to make a difference in the reading culture of their class and school. Through the process of selecting reading recommendations and planning class discussions, reading ambassadors will gain clarity on what they enjoy about reading, what their peers enjoy and how to share their passion with their peers.
Allowing more space for students to shape their class reading culture will also deepen their sense of community as fellow readers.
Teachers can nominate class reading ambassadors at the start of a new term to allow time for the ambassadors to plan and execute reading initiatives for the term.
As far as possible, class reading ambassadors should be appointed on a voluntary basis. Teachers should guide reading ambassadors in planning and executing their responsibilities (see the sample handouts below for possible roles and responsibilities).
Suggested book recommendations and discussion questions should be reviewed by the teacher in advance. This will help ensure that the texts discussed are age-appropriate and that a diversity of themes or text types are covered across the course of the year.
