Bringing a writer into your school is a great way to inspire both students and teachers, and bring reading to life. Students get a glimpse into the life of writers and writers can motivate students to read!
When should I invite a writer?
These sessions could take place at scheduled times of the year or during a particular school event.
Planning the visit
Decide on objectives, mode, format, and budget
Curate list of writers, and seek clearance from the school leaders
Contact the chosen writer, discussing possible dates, times, fees, etc.
Preparing for the visit
Practical arrangements: book venue/send zoom details, appoint facilitator, conduct technical run
Students: read book, brainstorm questions
On the day of the visit
Be ready to meet and greet the writer
Prepare a bottle of water/coffee/tea for the writer during/before or after the session
Facilitate the session by introducing the writer, maintaining discipline of the students and ensure that the session keeps to the agenda
After the visit
Check payment has been processed
Write a thank you note/email to the writer
Get feedback from students and share anecdotes with the writer
Facilitate follow-up discussions with students on the writer’s books
Consider activities to extend the learning of students
