Platforms that recommend books based on students' interests and readiness
Book recommenders support students in finding books that they enjoy and/ or are able to access at their readiness level. This sets students up for success and motivates them to read more extensively.
Book recommenders may be used at checkpoints when students need guidance on what to read. This might be at the start of the year or term, or before a term break. For example, book recommenders could be used by teachers or students after a student interest survey to bridge students’ interests to relevant reading.
Book recommenders may also be useful for students when selecting books for reading assignments or for teachers and/ or students when selecting books for a reading circle.
Where possible, book recommenders should recommend books that are available in the school or local libraries.
Depending on student readiness, teachers could:
demonstrate how to use a particular book recommender for students to access in their own time;
use a book recommender to find books based on students’ interests and readiness; or
use a book recommender to find book recommendations for reading circles.
