The Good Father Model: Saint Joseph

Nobody can replace the role of fathers in shaping the faith and values of their children. Experience shows that Mothers are at the very heart of the family.

Saint Joseph is the model of manly virtues. He measures up well to these challenging aspects of the vocation of father. Look how his foster son turned out!

“What makes a good father?” Here are some of the indicators from Successful Fathers by James B Stenson, modified.

Good fathers love the mother of their children and show it appropriately.
Good fathers have a sense of supportive partnership with their wives.
Good fathers think long-term about their children’s future life as adults, and frequently discuss their character development with their wives.
Good fathers frequently listen to and discuss things with their children.
Good fathers keep television and video games to a minimum.
Good fathers understand discipline, not as punishment or mere behavior control, but rather as a means of building children’s self-control and confidence.
Good fathers are confident of their authority.
Good fathers have at least several close friends.
Good fathers have a deep and active religious faith.
Good fathers pray for and with their families.
Good fathers teach their children to be poor and detached in spirit.
Good fathers always put their family’s welfare ahead of their jobs.

Let us Pray: Good Joseph, your pure heart seeks to know the will of God, to desire it, embrace it and accomplish it eagerly, quickly, and totally. The arc of your life always bends in God’s direction. Little wonder that God chose you to be the foster father and protector of Jesus and spouse of the Virgin Mary. You are rightly called the just man. Help all Christian fathers to embrace the vocation of fatherhood with strength, joy, and love. Amen.

At this pivotal moment in our history in a world that is coping with the COVID-19 pandemic, Holy Cross Ministries shares one mission: To inspire, foster, and promote the prayer life and spiritual well-being of families throughout the world. We have a magnificent challenge, to be a force for good in the world.

Our global ministry is a vibrant place of prayer and compassion where Father Peyton's sayings, "The family that prays together stays together" and "A world at prayer is a world at peace" come alive daily for our faithful worldwide.

As we collaborate, we are confident that your prayers help us achieve our ministry's goals. We are happy to draw your attention to two great Holy Cross religious on their golden jubilee of ordination to the priesthood. They are models of spiritual fathers who have dedicated their lives to the families in India and Ireland. We also have a few highlights from our ministry centers for this quarter.

Father Steve Gibson, C.S.C., shares his unique charism of retreat ministry with school children at the Peyton Centre, Attymas, Ireland. On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Ordination, we requested that he share his innovative, interactive and inspiring retreat ministry with youth. Please watch the video to see him in action.

Herve Morissette, C.S.C.

We have yet another great religious missionary who gave his entire priestly ministry to serve families in India. On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Ordination, Father Herve Morissette, C.S.C., shared with us the history of Holy Cross Family Ministries in India and his service to the Church. He has authored many catechetical books, which are widely used around the world. In 1996, as the millennium was inching closer, new vibes of Family Rosary were initiated in the Province of South India as Father Morissette, C.S.C., was asked by the Provincial, Rev. Father Maurice D’Souza, C.S.C., to initiate this ministry. Please watch the video to listen to him, his contributions and history of HCFM in India.

The Cause for Venerable Patrick Peyton

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I hope you, your families, and all you serve are keeping well. During this time of pandemic restrictions, we needed to adapt our June celebration of the anniversary of Father Peyton going home to God.

This experience caused me to want to share one example of the many worldwide uses of technology to come together in prayer. No matter where we live, or what is happening around us, by gathering virtually in our Chapters of the Father Peyton Prayer Guild, we are united in prayer as one family.

The 10 novenas on the events in the life of St. Joseph originate from St. Joseph Church, Toronto. As a response to the request of the people of the parish, Father Wilson Andrade, C.S.C, the pastor of the parish, researched and wrote a short Novena prayer for each of ten events in the life of St. Joseph. One young person took up the challenge to film these novena Prayers. A married couple of the parish helped to record the narration. These videos celebrate the 200th anniversary of The Brothers of St. Joseph. Father Wilson also dedicates these novena prayers to the Sisters of St. Joseph, who have planted and nurtured the faith in Toronto .

We beg you, therefore, to hasten the day of his beatification, so that your faithful people everywhere will remember his message that the family that prays together stays together, will imitate him in his devotion to your Mother and ours, and will be inspired by his holy life to draw ever closer to you with childlike confidence and love.
