This sixth grade year at G&T was a memorable one. There were many important and impressive projects, activities, events, and more. Read on to see what we did this year!
A Runthrough of the First Few Weeks
We kicked off the year and week #1 of G&T with some fun team building activities. This helped to improve our teamwork skills, which would be an important skill to have as a gifted and talented student. The spaghetti and marshmallow S.T.E.A.M. challenge was definitely a favorite of the students. On week 2, we did another team building activity, the paper chain challenge. This challenge once again helped to enhance our teamwork skills. By week three, the class had done their first 24 math tournament. We also did our first coding lesson of the year! Week 4 was Halloween! This week was a very fun one, as there were many different activities. We had our Jazzy Jack O' Lantern Contest/Autumn Exhibit, another coding lesson, Dodecahedron and Icosahedron Making, and much more! This was definitely a student-favorite week! Week 5 was our GAME ON with the Long Island Children's Museum! The description from the website is as follows: Students stepped into the role of a game developer as they designed their own arcade style game from the initial concept to a finished prototype! Materials used: cardboard trays, marbles, LED lights, graphics, and more in this STEAM program! Needless to say, this was one fun week! On week #6, we started our Journey Through Time project, as well as a 24 tournament, and coding a chase game! During week 7, progress with our Journey Through Time project went underway, as we had time to work on our marble run, as well as 3D-printing some special parts for our marble run! On week 8, we continued progress with our Journey Through Time projects, as well as a fun Jeopardy style game for our Science World news article. For week 9, we got into the festive holiday spirit at G&T with a fun digital holiday card on Scratch. We also continued our work on our marble runs, as presentation day was approaching.
Our Projects
Our first project of the year was our Journey Through Time project. For this project, us students had to work with one partner to create a presentation, as well as a marble run to represent eras in history. The topics chosen were the Industrial Revolution, The Space Age, The Digital Age, Medieval Times, Ancient Mesopotamia, Ancient Greece, The Victorian Era, and Ancient Egypt. All of the projects came out amazing! Our second project, to kick off our Greek Mythology unit was the mini project, the Wanted Poster and Investigative Report. For this project, students were asked to design a wanted poster for a Greek god/goddess. In the poster they had to include things like their god/goddess of choice’s Greek name, Latin name, where they could be found along with other information about them, and the myth they’re from and why they were wanted for it, along with the prize for their capture. In the investigative report, the students had to include the same information. Our next project for our Greek Mythology unit was publishing our Greek myths. For this project we had to write our own original Greek myths, as well as create an illustration to go with it. Our work was published into a book entitled “How it Really Happened.” Our myths turned out great! Our final project of the year was our independent study, our argumentative essay. In this project we had to write a paper including pros of our topic, along with a rebuttal and our opinion. We also had to design a tri-fold poster for our topic. This, as well as our book, was celebrated at our sixth grade Gifted and talented showcase!
As you can see, this sixth grade year at G&T was phenomenal one!
