Long Island Children's Museum Visit; Freedom Quilts. Students discovered the stories that quilts told in the days of the Underground Railroad to assist runaway slaves on their journey to freedom. Then, students used various fabric shapes to design a quilt that tells their very own personal story.
"My favorite part of today's program was glueing the fabric to the shapes. It was fun seeing how much better and colorful the patterns looked."
"I learned A LOT today from this program! One thing I could share with my friends and family is how abolitionists used quilts to communicate with the enslaved people. The quilts had patterns that represented signs and directions."

S.T.E.A.M. Challenge & Reflection
Team challenge with new friends: Who can build the tallest tower, using spaghetti, mini marshmallows, tape, one ruler, and one rubber band?
It was a fantastical year for 5th Grade in G&T. We had innovative projects, showing us how to work together, field trips, and many more memorable learning experiences. To find out exactly what we did, continue reading!
The first few weeks were super enjoyable. The class was greeted with a teamwork project in STEAM, making the tallest, and most sturdy tower out of a limited amount of pasta and marshmallows. There were many other things like this, like a paper chain challenge. We had a Jazzy Jack-O-Lantern contest, with awards and titles like “Most Creative,” “Most Spooky,” “Most Alien-Like,” and etc. During one of our field trips, we learned about The Underground Railroad, and made flags like the North Star that people used to get around the “tracks.” We learned how to do 24 tournaments, Go Fish style. If you find the answer to a question on deck, you tap the table lightly, state the answer, and take the card. In the end, the person with the most points wins. We got to work with another class, Ms. Salerno’s, and helped with cool things like Gravitrax, and informed them about World Down Syndrome Awareness Day.
Exciting Projects
Every aspect of G&T was fun, especially the projects. For the first project, we researched human rights, like freedom of speech or gender equality, and people like Malcolm X or Mahatma Gandhi. We created posters and slideshows to present to our class, blackout poems, and even more. Other projects we did were bridges, learning about the different types, such as: beam, suspension, arch, and more. We got a surprise guest: Uncle Alan, who taught us what it was like being an architect, and the difference between suspension and tension in bridges. We made our bridges out of household materials like Legos, toothpicks, and clay. We got to make foosball tables, with custom soccer players using popsicle sticks. Some included Taylor Swift, others Messi.
Saying Our Goodbyes
All in all, G&T went by so quickly and was so fun to be in, making all new friends, and learning something new and knowledgeable everyday. We are all sad it has gone so soon, when it feels like it began yesterday. Everyone is already excited to see and is anticipating what is planned next year. We hope to see you there!
