The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.
This video I created is a tutorial I created fall of 2022 during my student teaching placement. This video shows students how to apply and create a satisfying piece of work with a variety of materials and techniques. This helps as a teacher because it shows the demonstration of the project, which helps save time in class . How does this save time in class you may ask? Providing edited clips can be quicker than actually doing a live demo in class. I enjoy doing live demos, but sometimes having an edited video can help minimize usage of class time. Therefore this extra time can be used to include extra formative assessments or provide more work time in class.
While creating my demonstration video I was not only able to see how valuable it can be to have and use more in class time, but helped in showing students and myself the creative process of making artwork. It showed them how to use new material and mediums, and how to integrate them into a piece of art work. This goes along with the competent teacher 5B “understands principles and techniques, along with advantages and limitations, associated with a wide range of evidence-based instructional practices”. Also, with this demonstration it required a lot of understanding of the process, as a teacher I feel as though it is very important to understand your material. The importance to this is to get all the trial and errors out of the way to see what types of learning may be beneficial to you students. Doing the demonstration gave me an understanding of my learning material and how it will benefit my students cognitively. This also goes along with competent teacher 5A which states, “understands the cognitive processes associated with various kinds of learning”. When doing the demonstration, I realized that my students were engaging their observational and motor skills.
By having to create this demonstration it practiced my lesson planning skills, showing me the importance of trial and error to make a lesson plan that works for myself and my students. It advanced my skills in how to use and search for technology tools to incorporate in my lesson planning. This demonstration was especially beneficial when students were absent and missed my in class demo. I would provide this video as a resource to students to catch up on their 12 watercolor techniques. Before using video demos, I would have to sit one on one or in a group with students who missed the day of the assignment. This just become not doable for me and when I discovered how to make video demos it made my life in the classroom a lot easier. With this video demo students can catch up on missing work in class or even at home. That way you can focus on whats going on in class presently instead of attempting to back track with students.
This powerpoint was for a formative assessment I created during my student teaching fall 2022. This was specifically made for my watercolor pencil unit with a focus into abstract art. WIth this powerpoint I introduced the elements of abstract art which consists of no recognizable imagery,organic/geometric shapes, organix lines, and colors. After I introduced the elements of design for abstract art, I Introduced my formative assessment. In this formative assessment I wanted to trigger my students critical thinking skills. As a class we went over the three abstract paintings one by one. Two out of the three pieces were truly abstract (painting one and three), while one was considered an abstracted piece (Painting 2). I had students explain why or why not they believed the piece was abstracted. They used the elements of design for abstract art that I introduced in the beginning of class to justify their answer.
This artifact supports IPLS 5F) "knows strategies to maximize student attentiveness and engagement". I am expressing understanding of this standard due to creating an engaging formative assessment by discussing the concept of what makes a piece of art abstract. In addition, students are defending their ideas by using vocabulary that i introduced. I am also presenting ideas through both auditory and visual means.
Through this formative assessment I created I was able to check in with my students to see if they understood the concept of abstract art. It is definitely something I will continue in my future classroom. I like the fact that I had them discuss the concepts of what makes these three paintings abstract before they began their project. In addition, I had them practicing vocabulary and defending their ideas. I believe having them defend their ideas helped them understand the concept well before embarking on their own project.
