The competent teacher plans and designs instruction based on content area knowledge, diverse student characteristics, student performance data, curriculum goals, and the community context. The teacher plans for ongoing student growth and achievement.
Rationale
This artifact is a written reflection that is part of the curriculum unit assessments that were implemented in my high school placement in Fall 2022. This reflection is written into 4 categories: Craftsmanship, Composition, Technique, and Originality. Usually these reflections have students think critically about their work and reflect if they met project expectations. I usually like to post this about half way through a final project as a visual reminder.
This artifact aligns with IPTS 3N) "accesses and uses a wide range of information and instructional technologies to enhance a student’s ongoing growth and achievement". With this artifiact I am encouragin students to actively monitor their learning processes, which can then cue them to maintain or adapt their strategies in other contexts. Reflective writing prompts can also be used to cue students to think about their conceptual learning.
With this artifact I have learned that the act of reflecting requires retrieval, elaboration, and generation of information. Beyond the rich gains students receive from reflective writing. Reflective writing can also yield valuable insights for instructors about how to adjust their teaching, their course designs, and their assignments to address student-identified areas of struggle. In my future classroom I will implement reflections into my designed courses.
Rationale
This artifact was made during my students teaching Fall 2022. In this artifact is a power point obtaining daily agenda, a step by step instruction, and instruction with visuals showing the end results. This will give students an idea of what they are doing for the day, why, as well as assist with students who are absent and miss the instruction. Having materials listed may prevent students from moving around getting supplies during the demo when they had time to prepare at the start of class. This might mean they need a clearer picture of what is expected of them, and visually show expectations.
This artifact aligns with IPTS "3E) understands the appropriate role of technology, including assistive technology, to address student needs, as well as how to incorporate contemporary tools and resources to maximize student learning". Providing visual aids of the process being taught in class is vital when teaching students with speech and language difficulties, difficulties with executive function and problems with working memory. In addition, students who struggle with reading can see quickly and easily if they are allowed to continue onto the next step.
With this artifact I learned the importance of using visuals as aid for implementing my lesson expectations. This helped me organize my lessons, support student needs, and project expectations. This method of differentiation instruction not only benefits students but the teacher as well.
