The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.
Linoleum Printing Lesson Rationale:
This artifact contains am Honors high school art lesson on linoleum relief printing making. This lesson demonstrates one of the many disciplines of art I am capable of teaching in my content area. Linocut is something beautiful and simple, bit the prints it produces can be extremely intricate and complex. A print is created by carving a design into a block of lino, rolling ink onto the surface and laying paper or fabric on top then applying pressure to produce a print. However, since linoleum can be difficult to jump into for beginners, I wanted to familiarize my students with the concept of carving and using printmaking materials first. In this lesson I introduce my students to printmaking by using a 4x6 styrofoam plate.
This artifact connects to the second standard by creating a meaningful learning experience for the students based on pedagogical knowledge and understanding of content area material. Indicator 2M states, "uses a variety of explanations and multiple representations of concepts that capture key ideas to help each student develop conceptual understanding and address common misunderstandings". This lesson addresses potential misunderstandings and guides students through key ideas.
In the act of writing and giving this lesson I became more aware of potential misunderstanding the students may have. This broadened understanding allows me to better prepare for my future classroom by acknowledging even more places I can guide student to growth. In my future classroom I intend to content grow in my area of knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy.
Technology Presentation Rationale: The goal in introducing this presentation is for students to discover an interest in the material and initiate exploration of ideas and their interests. This was a PowerPoint presentation to the entire class and was created for the Final Linoleum Block Project requirements and step by steps. In class we went over as a class on how to find a reputable article. I had each group of students an assigned section of the article. The students then had to read the article and create a mind map as a group. After, I went around to rach group asking what their section was about and to provide me the theme, associations, and keywords that were developed while creating a mind map for this article. Their design has to compliment the article they chose by creating an editorial illustration. Editorial illustrations are produced for newspapers, magazines and websites to add a visual dimension to a piece of writing. This serves two main functions – it helps to grab the attention of the reader as they browse the publication, but can also help to add a new perspective to the article.
The competent teacher implements various teaching methods at different times. The goal is to create methods of inquire and structures of discipline. Standard 2 indicator 2K, states "engages students in the processes of critical thinking and inquiry and addresses standards of evidence of the disciplines". The guided discovery teaching strategy presented engages the student into critical thinking. This fostered a meaningful learning experience for each student.
This and other teaching strategies that were presented have better equipped me for my future classroom. I am able to connect and implement different teaching strategies for different situations and different students. To be an effective teacher I will need to have the ability to teach my discipline of art in many ways. One method may work well for one group of students and not for another grouping. I will need to be able to assess what methods work best and change course when needed. Being flexible in the way I connect and interact with the students will ensure all the students are able to meet their growth expectations.
