Rationale:
I wanted to create a space where students and families could be involved and aware of what is going on in the classroom. Therefore, the reason which lead me to create the artifact, which is my own website called "Ms. Reed's Art Classroom"! Ms. Reed's Classroom was created April of 2019 with Wix, it is a digital resource for anything you need to know about me as well as the agenda and expectations I have for the school year. The artifact consists of instructional strategies, procedures, rules, expectations, rewards, consequences, and much more. Students and their families will be able to use this website to find helpful resources and inspiration to use in class or at home!
Choosing to become a teacher, I aspire and strive to develop a classroom environment in which students and families feel comfortable and accepted. The artifact is a demonstration of my abilities in classroom management techniques that demonstrate a great student teacher and student parent relationship. The artifact greatly shows evidence of understanding for standard 4 by including pages talking about diversity, rules, expectations, procedure and etc. To achieve and incorporate diversity in the classroom I follow the performance indicator 4L "analyzes the classroom environment and makes decisions to enhance cultural and linguistic responsiveness, mutual respect, positive social relationships, student motivation, and classroom engagement". In addition, I incorporated this performance indicator in the artifact by transforming it into a diversity page that expresses the importance of embracing and respecting differences.
By creating this artifact I learned about new creative tools such as Wix to assist in expressing a digital vision of my expectations and goals for the school year. While creating the artifact I developed on my classroom management style and building a strong parent/student teacher relationships. I learned that having a proper classroom set up is an important factor. Believe it or not, the lay out of the classroom can affect student behaviours and academic success, so it is important to get your classroom set up right. By having a classroom website, this assists in establishing good communication with students and parents as well.
Rationale
I believe every artist needs an adequate space in which to create, and that space should inspire and support their creative process. If you’re looking for a place that nurtures your artistic journey, look no further.Below is a diagram of my classroom set up that was made in April of 2019. This classroom setup contains enough seating for students and table space for working on different mediums of art whether it may be paintings, drawings, and ceramics. In addition, there are computers for my students that prefer to work with digital art. There is also plenty of storage for students to have a safe place to keep their art pieces and materials.
This artifact aligns IPTS 4P) "modifies the learning environment (including the schedule and physical arrangement) to facilitate appropriate behaviors and learning for students with diverse learning characteristics". A classroom that has a well-defined physical arrangement and appears organized will promote a positive learning environment. A well-thought out physical arrangement is important for any type of education setting. Proper room arrangement provides predictability, which has a calming effect on many students. When students are better able to understand their environment and anticipate what is coming next, they tend to be less apprehensive. Their mental states are more conducive to learning new material. A decrease in anxiety typically translates into a decrease in misbehavior as well.
Through this artifact and experience being in the classroom I have learned the importance of maintaining and arranging a classroom environment. There are so many benefits to this, such as students learning to respect physical boundaries. There are boundaries between students’ areas and teacher-only areas as well as boundaries between each of the student’s individual work areas. This provides opportunities to teach students to respect other people’s spaces and belongings, an important skill in all life settings. In addition, students learn to anticipate the specific types of activities that will occur in specific areas of the classroom. This helps students participate more fully in the activity because they will enter the area with the mind-set that corresponds with the anticipated activity. Knowing which activity is next also can ward off misbehavior that often occurs when students are caught off guard or have inaccurate expectations regarding what is about to occur.
