Through my continued interest in learning and tutoring/mentorship, I had initially applied to be a tutor for the Learning Commons to share my knowledge in the past courses I've taken by helping underclassmen with any questions or concerns regarding their classwork. While I have already been tutoring for younger students in the Cincinnati Public School school system through Bearcat Buddies, a tutoring program on campus, I also wanted to branch out and expand on working with students that are closer in my age and potnetially have the same interests as me or even on the same career path that I am pursuing. As I applied to be a tutor for the Learning Commons, I reached out to one of my biology professors, Dr. Stoffer, to submit a reference form for me. I've gotten to know Dr. Stoffer very well as a Freshman taking the intro level biology class and have had numerous interactions and conversations with during their office hours, especially as they've had the chance to see me grow both in and out of the classroom. However, Dr. Stoffer encouraged that I apply as a learning assistant for his biology course which allowed me to envision myself in that role. I liked the consistency of being a learning assistant and realized that my role would be more impactful as I continue to build relationships with the students in the class with whom I would interact with consistently. And I feel like I have been able to do just that and more in my role as a learning assistant. One thing that I feel is very unique in being able to assist in a freshmen level class, compared to other higher level courses is the way in which you're striving to not only assist the students with their learning as a tutor and strengthen their understanding of the material in the class, but you're also stepping into the role of a mentor, as someone who is a reliable peer who is also approachable and friendly, and willing to share advice and guidance for navigating college as a first year. Combined with my knowledge in the course, I've pushed myself to envision myself as a freshman who was in the same place two years ago, and embody the most amazing people that I was surrounded by and was able to rely on, and especially who I felt welcomed by as I started my journey in college. I make it a priority to remember the importance of being compassionate and reliable in my role as a peer educator, and I have been able to reflect this in the way I approach students during lecture, the conversations and discussions I have with my students during my office hours, and the encouragement I provide my students when they share any concerns with me, both within the material of the course and outside. Keeping this in mind, and combined with my knowledge and exeprtise with the course, I hope to continue to encourage my students this way and provide a welcoming atmosphere for my students as I continue to supplement their learning and make an impact through my role.Â
