I started my tutoring journey during my sophomore year of high school through the school's peer tutoring program, with the recommendation of my high school Geometry teacher. I've always enjoyed and excelled in math and took the opportunity to help others in my class, and was grateful for the recommendation as I joined the program in my second year of high school. However, with the increase in COVID cases and attending school remotely, most of my tutoring was done online through Zoom sessions, as I helped students through drop-in tutoring sessions and individual one-on-one tutoring. Despite the unconventional approach and start to tutoring in the program, I've quickly come to really love and appreciate the tutoring relationships I've built with my peers and other students that I have tutored. Throughout my role, I realized the significance of mentorship, growth, and learning, both for my tutees and for myself as a tutor. While I've always had a passion for volunteering and community service, it was important to realize that progress and gratitude start small and can only expand from there. As I became involved with multiple different tutoring programs, I knew that it was something that I wanted to continue in college as well.
I came to hear about Bearcat Buddies from a Med Sci ambassador who I met during college day, and it was one of the very first programs that I joined as a first-year in college. The most rewarding aspect of being a tutor through Bearcat Buddies was being able to see the progress of my mentees and congratulate and celebrate their successes. As I continued my tutoring experience, I wanted to expand my interest further by stepping into the leadership role of an ambassador to encourage other students to experience and indulge in these experiences and understand the significance of their involvement. Specifically, as an ambassador, I work alongside a team of similarly motivated students, eager to serve as compassionate leaders who are willing to make a commitment to both themselves and other students to serve as supportive leaders and mentors.
Now as a Lead Tutor, I was able to expand my leadership skills in leading tutoring sessions and serving as a point of contact between the tutors and the advisory council and leadership team of Bearcat Buddies. I was able to take initiative by being a compelling speaker and listener, and exemplify student engagement and collaboration as I helped with various tabling events and bringing more awareness to the program and its cause. My role has allowed me to become a part of a small, yet impactful group of individuals who are actively involved in promoting the significance and uniqueness of the program and bringing value to its efforts.
Being able to reflect and see my progression in this program has allowed me to realize the impact I've had on its cause and bring value to the importance of tutoring and mentorship. Now, I hold many roles in the program, as an Ambassador, Lead Tutor, and Event Coordinator as part of both the leadership team and the advisory council. I'm hoping to continue my tutoring journey and utilize my leadership skills to ensure the program's growing success and support all of its endeavors.
