The Warren Bennis Leadership Institute, under which this program is hosted, is a leadership institute that emphasizes leadership as a core principle of development and strives to provide opportunities to enhance and grow these leadership qualities. As part of the very first cohort of students under the Women's Leadership Development Program, I attended a three-day leadership retreat, learning key skills in team-building and problem solving while working with groups of students from all different majors and degrees. Later, I was placed in a group with four other students, all of varying interests and goals but we collectively joined together and designed a project with the intention to encourage and motivate higher-level education in low-income and underrepresented students. Our mission was to dedicate our efforts towards shaping college as an available and rewarding educational experience for students to strive for and achieve their passions. Throughout the process, we assigned roles, creating a team charter with appropriate guidelines and standards for each of our roles within the team and consistently discussed our tasks within our consecutive meetings, while also receiving appropriate advice and guidance from our professional mentor, Shalee Lehning. Upon our initial design to host a three-phase program with engaging activities with local high school students from Hughes High School, we later had to shift focus in terms of our project due to time constraints and difficulties in terms of responsiveness from the school. While we reworked the project's scope, our project goal never changed, as we shifted our focus to a digital platform and created "From the Perspective", an interactive website designed with tips, resources, and advice for aspiring high-schools students looking into college as an option. Our goal was to ensure transparency and consistency upon the college admission process to provide valuable tips and reassurance in terms of what to expect, especially for those who may not have the appropriate resources to succeed. Upon completion of the program, our team presented our team goals, our project, and reflected upon the skills we utilized and learned throughout the process as we grew as leaders.Â
