Round 1: Standard Shipping

Round 1: Standard Shipping

Objective: The team must deliver a package, standard rate shipping, from their Zipline Mail Carrier to a house on the ground. The location of the house will be denoted by a three ringed target beneath the zipline. Teams will complete the objective by sending their Mail Carriers down the zipline while attempting to drop a spherical bean bag on the target below. Points for the round are based on first contact of the bean bag with the ground. Only one bean bag is allowed to be dropped per run.

Parameters: Figure 1 shows an outline of the zipline parameters; “H1”, “H2”, “L”, and target distances will be given to teams on the day of competition. Slope of the zipline can be calculated using the formula also shown in figure 1. Parameter “D” represents the distance of the center of the target measured back to the start of the zipline at ground level. The target parameters will match the target shown in Figure 2 and the center of the target will be in line with the zipline. There will be wall height of 6 inches around each ring of the target, see figure 3. Day of we will report all parameters in metric units.

Scoring: Each team will receive a practice run, so they can see how their Mail Carrier slides down the zipline. Nothing is to be dropped from the carrier for this run and the run is not scored. After that each team is allowed 2 scoring runs, between which the team can make adjustments if needed. The team will be scored based on where their package lands in reference to the target area. If the package reaches the center of the target, the team receives 5 points. If the package reaches the middle ring of the target, the team receives 3 points. And if the package reaches the outer ring of the target the team receives 1 point. The team will receive 0 points for a package that does not hit the target. The maximum score from the two runs will be kept.
