About
Gandharvas are celestial beings adept in classical arts and music. 'Gandh avarshathi ithi Gandharvam'. Meaning, that whose knowledge is gained from Gandh or smell. Here the word Gandh is used from the perspective of flavor of Swara or musical notes. The word Shastra refers to the term theory. Theory in Indian classical music has always been based on the practical arts and hence was transmitted orally via the Guru Shishya Parampara.
Gandharv Shastra is a humble attempt to promote and deepen your understanding in the theory of sound and Indian Classical Music among music lovers.
Up until the late 17th Century, musical texts were composed mainly in Sanskrit or lost to posterity. Post the arrival of foreign rulers in India, there was even lesser impetus to write works on music theory. Many works are today available as palm leaf manuscripts in libraries across the India waiting to be read and translated.
Western scholars, intrigued by the Music of India, began to research the ancient texts and forms of practice and began to write volumes of books on Indian Music from the view point of Western music theory. Indian Scholars have, from then on, taken up the revival of Indian Classical music and theory and have formalized whatever is being taught and studied today in Music varsities.
Gandharv Shastra or theory of music is an endeavor in expressing gratitude to my Gurus and spread the fragrance of music theory to students and knowledge seekers alike!
I started studying music theory for my music examinations from various sources - books, websites, blogs and over the course of years i ended up translating a substantial amount of work from Hindi to English and making detailed notes on music theory. I believe that reading theory is also a crucial enabler apart from practice helping students to relate, appreciate music of the past and what is being performed today.
I strive to bring all concepts of Indian Music Theory under one roof, simplify the topic for the audience and update the website with newer content using various publications and research papers
