Microorganisms perform ecological functions and drive biogeochemical cycles that transform matter and energy on a global scale. Recent advances in sequencing technology and the analysis of DNA extracted from environmental samples (metagenomics) have made it possible to systematically characterize the taxonomic and genomic composition of microbial communities in diverse biomes. In collaboration with Med Biotech Laboratories in Uganda, we explored and compared microbial community assemblies between three polluted rivers in Uganda affected by anthropogenic activities.
