We study adaptation and evolutionary aspects related to aquatic organisms. We need to be motivated, curious, ambitious, collaborative, communicative, bold, and hard-working. Therefore, I expect students to be enthusiastic about evolution, work hard, communicate regularly and ask for help if need it, become an expert in your field, accept feedback, keep a record of your work, be an active member of the lab, and most important be respectful of my time and other colleagues time.
As your advisor, I will answer your questions, guide you and challenge you, and treat you like a colleague.
Students who are interested in freshwater ecology/spatial ecology/genomics are encouraged to contact me. Opportunities exist to learn field research skills, molecular laboratory techniques and statistical modeling with R.
I have several projects running, and I am actively recruiting master's and doctoral students via the master and doctoral course by the UCSC, both to start in early-mid 2027. Scholarships are available for potential candidates.
Master project 1. Population genetics of aquatic insects in Argentina in collaboration with Universidad Nacional de Patagonia, Argentina.
We are interested in genetic comparisons among aquatic insect populations across different locations in Patagonia.
You will learn bioinformatics, population genetics, and correlations
Master project 2. eDNA for fish communities changes
We are interested in obtaining information on genetic admixture and population genetics of fish communities in Chile.
You will learn bioinformatics, population genetics, and correlations
Master project 3. Machine learning tools for biodiversity
We are interested in obtaining information on biodiversity changes by applying ML techniques.
You will learn bioinformatics, population genetics, and modeling.
Doctoral project 1. Landscape genomics of anisakiasis
Phylogenomics and species distribution linking with the evolutionary history. An exciting project that mixes biology and medicine.
You will learn genomics, wet lab, bioinformatics, molecular clock, and phylogenomics
I will welcome inquiries about postdoctoral projects in our research group. If the research in the lab is a good fit for you, please email me with your CV and short summary of your interest. We can develop collaborative projects through postdoctoral fellowships, such as Fondecyt fellowship.
