The High School Explainer Program at the Exploratorium is a flagship youth program at the museum that offers a unique work-based educational enrichment program for high school and early college students. Explainers work on the museum floor with visitors, exploring hands-on exhibits, facilitating demonstrations, answering questions, and tending to other duties. Explainers observe and explore their own learning processes as they are introduced to broad concepts in a range of scientific disciplines. While they provide a valuable service to the Exploratorium and its visitors, Explainers cultivate their own communication and leadership skills, expand on their scientific knowledge, and learn from each other via peer mentorship.
Hours and Pay
$17.90 /hr.
HS Explainers are expected to work 1 weekend day at 7.5 hours.
Eligibility requirements
Candidates must be high school-aged students
(including students in traditional and alternate post-high school programs – between the ages of 15 and 18 for first-time Explainers, and up to the age of 20 for returning Explainers.)Must be able to obtain a valid work permit.

The High School Explainer PACE Program (Professional Advancement Career Exposure)

The High School Explainer: PACE Program is designed to provide young people between the ages of 17-21 with supplemental museum work experience. Explainers are exposed to a variety of museum disciplines while supporting the High School Explainer program in its core mission of providing an interactive social environment rich in both science and the arts in which students can explore phenomena, learn about themselves, and provide the museum with an informed and energetic floor staff.
Hours and Program Length
This is a part-time, non-exempt, temporary assignment (8-19 hrs/wk).
This position is expected to begin on July 16, 2023 to September 10, 2023.
Eligibility requirements
Must be available to work Monday, Thursday evenings, and (Saturday or Sunday)
Ability to work in an independent and self-directed manner.
Responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
Must be between the ages of 17-21
Mayor's Youth Employment & Education Program (MYEEP) provides San Francisco youth with paid work opportunities, academic support, and tools they’ll need to succeed in the workplace. MYEEP also gives youth a chance to build relationships with other members of their neighborhood communities.
Mandatory Pre-Empoyment Training
The pre-employment training period and workshops support youth in gaining the tools needed to enter the workforce.

Student Health Advisory Board (SHAB) consists of 4-10 high school students who work with the Student Family Services Division to promote safe, healthy, and affirming school environments for students across the district. SHAB members come from different public high schools across San Francisco. Their mission is to bring awareness and educate others of the health disparities of tobacco use through the Public Service Announcement contest and promote healthy choices.
Eligibility Categories
Elementary School, 4th-5th grade (All Submissions must include at least three facts about anti-smoking/vaping)
Middle School 6th-8th grade (All Submissions must include at least three facts about anti-smoking/vaping)
High School, 9th-12th grade (All Submissions must include at least three facts about anti-smoking/vaping)
LGBTQ- 4th-12th grade (All Submissions must show how tobacco and vaping products specifically affect the LGBTQ+ community and include at least three facts about anti-smoking/vaping)
Submission Criteria
Art: Original piece (for example: photography, painting, drawing, poem, spoken word, etc..)
Minimum: 8.5”x 11”, Maximum: 11”x 17”
Video: Produced, directed, and acted by youth. NO real drugs, cigarettes, or vaping devices are allowed. Video should be between 30-90 seconds.
Videos must be uploaded to Youtube and to this Google Form.

Research and carry out a textile design project led by The Museum of Craft and Design and artist Charlotte Jones

About Castro History Tour
The Castro History Tour internship is a paid leadership program for San Francisco-based LGBTQQ+ youth and allies (13-18). This program is for youth interested in learning about social justice, building community, and has a focus on learning more about queer and trans history. You will be part of collectively planning a walking tour through the beautiful Castro with LGBTQQ+ youth and allies! Interns will leave the internship with a better understanding of the LGBTQQ+ movements and people that influenced San Francisco communities to become what they are today!

The EYC Mentorship program is a 6-12 week program dedicated to the positive empowerment and development of Asian / Pacific Islander LGBTQQ+ youth in San Francisco. Mentorship pairs youth with a QTAPI adult mentor for weekly/ biweekly 1:1 guidance and support.
Youth participants will build a supportive relationship with their mentor, exchange knowledge, advice, and experiences, and learn more about their identities.

Exploring Leadership (EL) is a transformative summer program that trains high school students to become active citizens and assume leadership roles in their communities. Through a set of Coro modules, the program increases Youth Fellows’ abilities in critical thinking and goal setting, ultimately giving them the skills to become effective facilitators and collaborators for community change.

Program Commitments
CiS is a year-round internship. Interns are required to:
Attend the New Intern Orientation (June 12-15, 2022 from 10 AM - 3 PM)
Attend Wednesday trainings every week during the summer
Attend Wednesday trainings every other week after school during the academic year
Commit to working 10-16 hours per week during the summer
Work up to two weekdays (4:30-6:30 PM) after school and on Saturdays during the school year
Attend an overnight, multi-day trip during spring break (required for SFUSD students only)
Careers in Science is a multi-year, year-round, paid internship and youth development program for San Francisco high school students who come from communities underrepresented in STEM, including girls and students of color.
Eligibility Requirements
Currently enrolled full time as a 9th or 10th grade student in an SFUSD school
Maintain a GPA of 2.5 and a grade of C or higher in science and math
Be able to obtain a valid work permit (US citizens and others authorized to work in the US)
Commit to all attendance requirements for 2 or 3 years, through high school graduation
Be able to commute to the Academy and nearby locations after school and on Saturdays during the school year, and on weekdays in the summer (some remote work may be required)
Demonstrate interest and enthusiasm for learning, teaching, and doing science

Join Generation Chinatown, a paid 15 week artist-in-residence program for SF high school youth. Don’t know what an artist-in-residency program is? No worries! This artist residency is a program that provides artists with studio space, artistic/financial resources, mentorship and community to support their artistic practices.
Through Generation Chinatown, you will learn from BIPOC local and international artists and gain skills in art-making, interact with local community leaders and learn how artists respond to community issues through art. You will explore new ways of creating alongside a tight-knit group of peer artists, work out of the shared studio at 41 Ross, and create public art in Chinatown.

Emerging Community Leaders is a workshop-based youth services program for high school students!
Staff provide academic support and enrichment, social and leadership skills, health & wellness instruction, and opportunities to explore cultural identity.
We will be partnering with Magic Theatre on a series of storytelling, performance, and workshops that center on identity, representation, intersectionality, and activism.
We will also have career exploration, college application, financial aid workshops, and field trips.

Every Wednesday in room 119 after school.
Girls on the Mic is an audio engineering and production workshop for girls, femmes, and non-binary students.

The Enoki Collective is a program for young women, femmes and TGNC youth*** to explore the intersections of gender oppression, race, class, and culture. Youth will build their leadership and facilitation skills, learn and build their analysis in different topics and find healing and community with like minded peers.
Enoki Collective meets every other Monday from 5-6:30pm at CPA Office starting September 19th
*** This program is open for any youth that identify as- young women, femmes, gender non conforming or non binary youth, and trans youth

Youth MOJO is a leadership development program at Chinese Progressive Association for high school students in San Francisco. We work on social issues affecting working class families such as:
healthcare
education
workers’ rights
We do this by empowering young people to work towards positive change in our communities.
Through Youth MOJO, folks develop and strengthen leadership, public speaking, communication, advocacy, and organizing skills, in a friendly and engaging environment.
Participants can receive a $150 stipend for participating in MOJO.
PAY: This is a paid program via stipend. Exact amount depends on participation.

YAWAV: Clementine Collective is a year long leadership program at the Community Youth Center dedicated to the positive empowerment and development of Asian / Pacific Islander LGBTQIA+ youth and their allies in San Francisco.
Clementine Collective participants learn about API and LGBTQIA+ identity, history, and culture, while creating community with other young people. Participants also create and facilitate workshops for the wider community about LGBTQIA+ topics. Our goals are to strengthen the resilience, pride, knowledge, and skills of youth leaders so that we can educate others and build healthy communities.
Please Note: This program is a cohort of YAWAV (Young Asian Women Against Violence).

About Summer in the City:
The Summer in the City internship is a paid leadership program for San Francisco based LGBTQQ+ youth and allies (14-18). This program is for youth interested in learning about social justice, building community, and has a focus on learning more about queer and trans history. We will collectively create a youth dance open for all queer teens and allies in the bay area! Interns will leave the internship with a better understanding of the LGBTQQ+ movements and people that influenced San Francisco communities to become what they are today!
This summer camp is open to teens throughout the Bay
Must be ages 13-19 with priority for San Francisco youth — SF participants can even get paid $150 for attending!

We are looking for young people who are passionate about sexual health to apply to be a speaker on our panel and work with us to bring this event to life.
The Youth Advisory Council, a project of Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach, is a group of Bay Area Youth aged 14-18 that works to stop domestic and dating violence & spread awareness of API community issues by educating their peers through trainings, events, and media arts projects.
The YAC members receive paid stipends based on meeting specific participation needs of the program!
Requirements:
You must be a teen aged 13-18, and able to commit at least one full year to the program (preferably 2).
We meet every other Sunday from 10am-12:30pm, alternating between Oakland and SF offices. You MUST be able to attend meetings, as well as occasional special events, on both sides of the Bay.
Currently, meetings are both virtual and in-person
You must make 20 out of 30 meeting hours and attend one mandatory event per pay period to receive a stipend
You must be able to attend API-ACT, a week-long summer intern training

Summer Bayview Youth Advocates
Bayview Youth Advocates (BYA) is a multicultural youth leadership development program for high school students who want to make a difference in their community. Each year, 30+ youth are selected to become Youth Advocates and together they will work to reduce violence and create harmony and understanding through advocacy, education and outreach. Latino Youth Work Application
These internships are designated for Latinx young adults. Interns will work on the Task Force committees, addressing the needs of Latinos impacted by COVID.

Program description: Students will learn how to build an artistic practice in the field of photography. The photography aspect of the class will focus on the basics of composition, exposure, color theory, photo sequencing, as well as dive into the history of photographic image.
Fashion and Illustration
Who can apply: Rising 9th-graduating seniors at a San Francisco public high school (priority for rising 9th-12th)
Dates: Meetings are from July 6th-30th, Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 1-3pm, independent study August 2nd-August 13th
Program description: Students design and sew their own original fashion pieces + clothing. They learn to hand stitch, embroider, and work with different fabrics and dyes. Students have made totes, masks, customized t-shirts, and upcycled thrifted clothing and much more.
2D Media and Music Production
Who can apply: Rising 9th-graduating seniors at a San Francisco public high school (priority for rising 9th-12th)

Program description: Learn various drawing, painting and printmaking techniques and how these flat art forms can easily shift dimensions. Learning sustainable processes that involve using household items and scraps. Create your own graphics to print on various materials.

Bayview Youth Advocates (BYA) is a multicultural youth leadership development program for high school students who want to make a difference in their community. Each year, 30+ youth are selected to become Youth Advocates and together they will work to reduce violence and create harmony and understanding through advocacy, education and outreach. Summer In The City Internship
The Summer In The City internship is a paid leadership program for San Francisco LGBTQQ+ youth and allies. This program is for youth interested in learning about social justice, building community, and learning more about queer and trans history. We will collectively create a virtual LGBTQQ+ event or final project of your choosing.
REQUIREMENTS:
14 to 18 year olds.
This summer’s internship will be remote, so you can use a phone or computer to join us.
VIRTUAL PROGRAM TIMEFRAME:
June 1st-July 29th (9 weeks, 6-9 hours a week)

Youth MOJO
A leadership development program at Chinese Progressive Association for high school students in San Francisco.
Our youth program this Summer, in addition to engaging workshops on issues of class, race, gender, immigration, and more, will also be working on People's Recovery Campaign where we will identify the needs of our community as we recover from COVID-19 pandemic.
Summer orientation for Youth Mojo will be on Friday, May 21st from 4-6pm on Zoom.

Inspiring Young Emerging Leaders (I-YEL) - Park Hop Program
Bay Area and African American history come together in a PAID program that is just for a select few students in your school. You will learn about important history that occurred in the Bay Area as told by Park Rangers. This week long program pays up to $250 and potential to get credits for school. This program will be online through Zoom.
Places and historical sites you will have the chance to learn about:
Alcatraz (the struggles of African Americans imprisoned on the Rock)
Sutro Baths (John Harris' civil rights story)
Buffalo Soldiers (Brave African American soldiers who were also the first "park rangers")
Port Chicago (50 men charged with mutiny)
Community and Work Panel (Learn about careers in the parks)
Come be inspired and learn about important history that belongs to you and your community.
Once you hear these stories you have the opportunity to share these stories through your art and through your voice!

GIRLFLY SUMMER ART & ACTIVISM PROGRAM
The 2021 Summer Arts & Activism Project will bring 20 young women from the Bay Area for four weeks to:
Get hands-on experience in site specific dance, and make dances at Quesada Gardens in San Francisco’s Bayview District
Earn $500
Create original dances and perform them
Learn from working with professional dance artists, writers, and gardeners
Learn about issues of girls’ empowerment, community building, land acknowledgements, and racial justice
Connect with young women/GNC youth across neighborhoods, schools, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and gender identity

The HOMEY Youth Leadership Program’s mission is to educate, organize and empower young people (ages 13 to 18 years old).
“Kalpulli”, in the Nahuatl (one of the many indigenous languages in Mesoamerica) means “large house”. HOMEY's Kalpulli is where we gather to decolonize and educate ourselves about our culture and our stories, to promote cultural activities, and watch over our community.

An internship program for high school juniors and seniors that provides paid work experience in San Francisco city government departments. Due to COVID-19, we will be moving forward with a virtual program for the fall semester, where interns will have the opportunity to do remote work with mentors, attend job readiness workshops, and practice community building with a cohort of 30 other youth.
