Krÿptic is a 4 piece band local to San Diego, members include Bass, Kai, Jerry, and Ivan
Q1-
Andy: How did you come up with the band name?
Bass: So, me and the ex guitarist made the band, like, in on my birthday, 2023. and he had the name already kind of cocked and ready, but he left in August. So you know, it's just been our band name for the entire time.
Q2-
Andy: When did you guys all start playing together?
Bass: Ivan and I started playing together, in, I guess like beginning of 2020 because that's when we both started learning our instruments. We're siblings. And then Jerry, we started together because of School of Rock. We were in some of those, like, performance groups type things. And so we kind of built a connection from that, asked him in the band in like September of ‘23 and that's when we all started playing together. And Kai joined in June of this year.
Q3-
Andy: What bands or artists inspired your sound?
Bass: Currently, I'm really inspired by a lot of screamo artists, kind of like Orchid and Saetia and some just like subliminally acoustic kind of screamo artist But we're generally, really based in, like, new metals, sludge, kind of death metal a little bit. Oh, groove metal a lot too. So no specific artists, just kind of a lot of sounds from genres.
Q4-
Andy: what's you guys' favorite venue to play in San Diego?
Bass: I mean, we'll have to answer that individually. I really love the Che Cafe because of all of the mutual aid they do and a lot of the events that they do are just really good for the community. So I'm a big fan of that.
Kai: Honestly, I like Windingwalk Park. That was probably like, like the most active show. That was so funny.
Jerry: for me, I like any House shows. Anything that's in somebody's house, like, just, like, compact with a bunch of people in there, because you kind of can do a little bit more of whatever, you don't gotta worry about like, oh, are we gonna get kicked out? Is it a house, you can kind of do whatever we want there.
Ivan: I like the CVS skate park shows. Like, the vibe is just always… the most like hardcore shit that it could be.
Q5-
Andy: Do you guys write songs together or separately?
Bass: So we all kind of write a bunch of riffs and then we'll come together and practice them and kind of piece them together. Sometimes we'll jam something out in a rehearsal and it'll become a song. Like Tonight we just performed one of those. We made it on Thursday and it just kind of happened to be. But sometimes it takes a lot more, like individually all write a bunch of guitar parts and then everyone will add their pieces on top or like Jerry will come with a basseline and then we'll kind of add a jump beyond that and then Kai will make something or I'll make something. And then vocals always come last just because it's kind of hard to start from there in my opinion.
Q6-
Andy: what song means the most to you? And why?
Bass: Um, I'm kind of torn, I think Terra Emorte is one that's really, really, really important to me because I wrote it like, four years ago in 2021, and it's a completely different song than it is now. So just to see that progression is super cool. But Heavy is the Heart that Bears the Cross is something that's super important to me and relevant to me right now concerning this song, so one of those two.
Kai: I think carcass because it was the first song Bass taught me before we went on our San Bernardino tour and I remember I struggled with the breakdown and I spent like hours up all night or not even hours, like maybe like two hours trying to like get it down because I don't play that type of stuff. So, yeah.
Jerry: So some of the- I have like two songs I believe are really important me. So first is Terra, because when we played Terra and I made the basseline, it finally kind of showed how much I start flourishing with bass guitar, because I haven't been playing as long as everybody else has in the band. So it allowed me to create a baseline that was a lot bigger than what I've ever done before. And then also with Tyrant, I really like playing Tyrant. It's really. It's me just because of the fact that it's really bass heavy. in certain parts, and I love kind of- I'm a little bit of an attention whore, I love seeking attention. And when there's a bass guitar part, I could just kind of stand in front and being like, oh, look at look at me now. I love that. I love that type of shit.
Ivan: For me, it's probably going to be Deadbeat because that one's about me and Bass's dad. Either that one or Carcass just because Free Palestine, you know?
Q7-
Andy: what's's been your best memory as a band so far?.
Bass: That's hard. There's a lot of really, really great ones. Like our first tour up to Anaheim with like our OG lineup that happened like last year, but I think for me, it's probably going to be Soma because that was like, I don't know, Soma's such a legendary venue and so to be able to play that with, like, my band is, like, just, like, basically a dream come true, but also, like, this tonight at the Che actually was like the best Che show that I think we've played. So I'm one of those two. Tonight or July 18th. No, sorry, July 12th.
Kai: Whoa… that's hard. Either Soma or our tour in San Bernardino, that was so fun. [Bass: June 13th at Void?] Yeah, dude. Oh, no, June 14th. It was June 14th. It was June. Dude, I fucking love the Void. But yeah, those are, that's my, yeah, the tourist San Bernity, you know, best memory.
Jerry: So I'm going to have to say either Soma or the San Bernardin tour with the San Bernardino tour, one of my favorite memories from it is not even like when we were playing. It was when we were up in our Airbnb. Me and Kai had actually share a bunk bed. And when we woke up, he's like, dude, you talk in your sleep, you move too much in your sleep. Like, what is wrong with you? Dude, was getting out of what's going on? But, that has to be, what about my favorite memories and then definitely Soma, its like a crazy venue. There were so many people there. actually being on stage is seeing a sea of people, like, below you is an insane feeling.
Ivan: I think Soma or the Winding Walk Show that we had recently, because when we just like having to adapt to being kicked out of winding walk by a park ranger, uh, fuck that, dude. You look younger than me.. you know, just that the adaptation that we all had to do as a band to like move to a completely different location. It was uh, yeah, it was really inspiring.
Q8-
Andy: Okay, if someone's never heard your music, what tracks should they start with?
Bass: I think Terra Emorte is a good track to start with. Or Unbridled, because it's the start to our EP. And I think it kind of sets the mood for the kind of energy we bring on stage and musically. So one of those two.
Q9-
Andy: for my last question, any shows or projects you're excited about?
Bass: I mean, I'm always excited for shows. Our next one is October 25th at Amplified Studios, and we are working on an album currently. We have a couple songs that we've been playing, Tyrant and Heavy's the Heart. But there's like so much more to come. So just keep your eyes peeled. I don't know when it'll be done. Hopefully in a few months, but Yeah. All platforms. specifically, bandcamp. We're gonna have a band camp under insanity. So all the insanity artists, including Kryptic, will have like our music on there as well as merch and that should be up sometime mid October.
