Fractions using Quantities

Introduction

Class demo ~ 10 minutes

Students will be asked to stand up and split into 2 categories, owns pet/s and does not own pet/s.

Student who own pets will be asked to stand on one end of the classroom and the rest on the other end.

Teacher will then ask everyone how many student are there in the class - to which students will be kept busy counting.

Students to simplify the answer.

Repeat with another example like how many males are in the class and what fraction of the class are male?

Time True/False Activity ~ 15 minutes

Express minutes as a fraction of an hour

• Students to attempt in pairs

Matching Activity ~ 20 minutes

Following on from introduction, identify that One number can be expressed as a fraction of another number.

Evaluate quantities as a fractions of measurements

• Attempt in pairs
• Discussion

Class demo

• While students are counting the number of students in the class, teacher should quickly write on the board or have ready the question: " There are X students in the class. Y amount own pet/s. What fraction of the class own pet/s?"
• Teacher to write the expression of this question as a fraction and have all students seated.
• Ask student if the fraction can be further simplified? (Hopefully yes, if not, remind the students about simplifying fractions if it can be done).
• Have students copy the working on the board.
