Adding Fractions

Orientation

Recap ~ 5min

Recap on process of adding fractions, which students have prior knowledge of.

Students to complete a worksheet on adding fractions with common denominators ~ 5 minutes

Introduction

Sequence ~ 5min

Teacher will address any concerns from the feedback she/he received from the exit cards in the previous lesson

Students will use their knowledge of converting mixed numbers into improper fractions to add mixed numerals (with common denominators)

Students will come up to the board to give reasons for their answer to the questions

Body

Demonstration ~ 10min

On the whiteboard, demonstrate to students the step by step process of adding fractions with unrelated numbers - have them follow and write down in their book

• Do 2-3 more examples with them

Dice Fraction Activity ~ 10min

• Students are paired up and handed 4 dice - 2 for each student
• Students are to roll their dice one at a time and form a proper/improper fraction from it - both students write each others fractions into their books
• Students add these fractions up and simplify further
• Repeat; form a new fraction by rolling the dice again
• Students are to continue this activity till they have found the solution to 6 different equations

Add it up Game ~ 15min

The aim of the game is to get the highest number by adding the fractions that students have obtained.

Students are to work in groups of 4 and are given a set of 12 fractions cards faced down.

• Fractions cards vary in terms of type (proper, improper, mixed number)

Students split the cards equally amongst each other ( each student gets 3) and they have to add the fractions cards they have by working it out in their books. Whoever ends up with the highest number after adding the fractions wins the 1st round of the game.

Repeat for 4 more rounds and the person/s who end up with the most tallies wins the game.

Conclusion

Calculator Demo ~ 5 min

Students use the calculator to validate the solutions they worked out in the game.

Teacher responsibilities...

Recap

• Do one example on the board with students and hand out the worksheet for students to complete.
• While students are working, walk around to observe students work and correct if mistakes are being made.

Sequence

• Recap on last lessons work
• Hand out the questions sheet for students to do individually (consisting of 3 questions); worksheet will only entail mixed numbers that have a common denominator
• Ensure students are all on task
• Randomly pick a student to come up to the whiteboard and show their working

Demonstation

• During the demonstration, explain WHY students need to find a common denominator to add (and subtract, but this will be reinforced in Lesson 3)

Dice Fraction

• Instruct students to work with their partner
• Explicitly instruct them to write down the addition of fractions in their books throughout the activity
• Walk around to ensure every student is on task and that there is no one without a partner, allow for 3 people if need be.

Add it up Game

• Throughout the game, the teacher should go around checking students work that's been done in class

OR

• finish checking students homework if haven't done so during the class

OR

• can involve themselves in the game as well by joining a group that doesn't have 4 people

Calculator Demo

• Teacher demonstrates to students how to use the calculator to input fractions.
