Students have knowledge of adding fractions with common denominators.
Students should know how to find the lowest common multiple (LCM) and highest common factor (HCF) of numbers.
Recap on process of adding fractions, which students have prior knowledge of.
Students to complete a worksheet on adding fractions with common denominators ~ 5 minutes
Teacher will address any concerns from the feedback she/he received from the exit cards in the previous lesson
Students will use their knowledge of converting mixed numbers into improper fractions to add mixed numerals (with common denominators)
Students will come up to the board to give reasons for their answer to the questions
On the whiteboard, demonstrate to students the step by step process of adding fractions with unrelated numbers - have them follow and write down in their book
The aim of the game is to get the highest number by adding the fractions that students have obtained.
Students are to work in groups of 4 and are given a set of 12 fractions cards faced down.
Students split the cards equally amongst each other ( each student gets 3) and they have to add the fractions cards they have by working it out in their books. Whoever ends up with the highest number after adding the fractions wins the 1st round of the game.
Repeat for 4 more rounds and the person/s who end up with the most tallies wins the game.
Students use the calculator to validate the solutions they worked out in the game.
