The concept of fractions is usually challenging for students so this Unit of Work has been developed to help students form a foundation in support of their conceptual understanding of abstract mathematics, like the concept of algebra. This is because fractions provide the basis on which other numbers work, algebraic thinking and proportional reasoning. Fractions also supports students in making critical links to other maths strands such as geometry, measurement, rates, probability and statistics.
Although fractions underpin these complex mathematical topics, their relevance is not limited to the study of mathematics. Fluency with fraction is also required for many activities of daily life: following recipes when cooking, reading maps, calculating discounts, comparing rates and finding the chance of something happening etc.
