Brainstorm (on whiteboard) ~ 5 minutes

Each table group of students will have a whiteboard and given a different coloured marker each.

Ask students "What is a Fraction?" - students are to brainstorm everything they know that is related to fractions, including diagrams ~ 3 minutes

Students share what their group brainstormed to the rest of the class

Introduction

Definition - Vocab ~ 5 minutes

Students write down the definition of a fraction and the components that make up a fraction

Students also write down the three types of fractions and an example for each

Body

Improper fraction to mixed number - Domino Fraction ~ 20 minutes

Students are shown 2 examples of how to convert an improper fraction into a mixed number and vice versa.

Paired Activity ~ 15min

Pairs of students are given cards with fractions on it

They are to lay out the cards on the table and match up improper fractions to its mixed numbers.

Once done, students justify their answers to the teacher

Students write down the correctly matched fractions into their books, showing working out.

Find your match! Activity ~ 10min

Give each student a fraction card and ask them to find the student with the equivalent fraction.

Tell students they will work with their partner to represent fractions on a number line; the students with the fraction in it's simplest form will stand next to their equivalent fraction on the number line.

Check as a class and discuss. Have students recreate in their notebooks.

Exit cards ~ 5min

Ask students to write down 3 things they learnt/liked about the lesson and to justify their response.

Brainstorm

• Instruct all students to brainstorm on the whiteboard
• During brainstorm, teacher observes students participation by looking for the students who've not yet written anything on the whiteboard - identified by the coloured markers distinct to each student in the group
• After 3 minutes, teacher chooses a few table groups to share what the know about fractions

Defintion - Vocab

• On the whiteboard, explain and write down the definition of a fraction and the components that make it up (e.g. numerator, denominator)
• List the type of fractions; proper, improper and mixed with an example of each

Improper fractions to mixed numbers - Domino Fraction

• Replicating the process given in the video, teacher uses 2 examples of improper fractions (of her own choice)

Teacher to work with the class by asking questions:

• Where will I place the whole number in the mixed number?
• Where is the remainder placed in the mixed number? Why?
• Optional: Teacher choose a student to show their working solution on the board
• During the activity, teachers should ensure all students are engaged with the activity
• For groups of students who finish early, ask them if they would be able to convert mixed numbers to improper fractions.

Paired Activity

• Observe students work during the activity and interfere when a misunderstanding is occurring
  • E.g. student is adding the denominator and whole number instead of multiplying in the process of them converting mixed number to improper fraction
• Check students work and advise them of any mistakes they've made, only give hints.

Find your match!

• Instruct students to find their pair and to line themselves up on the number line.
• Explicitly state that the person with the simplest fraction is to stand not in the number line but next to their equivalent fraction (like a number line drop effect).

• Collect student exit cards at the end of the lesson
