Lesson Goals

Students are able to:

Multiply and divide fractions and decimals using efficient written strategies and digital technologies(ACMNA154)

explain, using a numerical example, why division by a fraction is equivalent to multiplication by its reciprocal (Communicating, Reasoning)

Multiplication of fractions and mixed numerals and write fractions in it's simplest form

Division of whole numbers by fractions and vice versa

Conceptual knowledge of the flip and multiply method for the division of fractions

Students will be using the flip and multiply procedure that was briefly mentioned in the previous lesson.

Debrief given on definition of multiplicative inverses or reciprocals with examples on the board.

Students are to copy the definition and examples.

Students work in pairs on the given problem on the board.

Have to model the situation in their books, using a diagram and write the number sentence.
Solve the problem.

Pair students up and give them a worksheet on dividing fractions -->

Have students write down the questions and solution in their books, then compare each others works to ensure accuracy.

Recap on flip and multiply method using examples, but before doing so cover reciprocals and its examples.
Have students do some examples on the whiteboard using division of whole numbers by fractions and vice versa (3 examples)

Place students in pairs and pose a worded problem on the board. I have two thirds of a rectangle and I want to divide it by one half. How many pieces will I have?
Ask students to model the situation and write a number sentence.
Monitor partners working on the task and ask the same type of guiding questions when students appear to be struggling with how to represent the situation.
After observing students progress and if majorty have finished, solve the problem on the board.

Instruct students to write down their answers on their worksheets - to stick into their books.
While students are working on this worksheet, mark students' homework from previous lesson.
