Yu Dao is a large city situated in the Earth Kingdom. Yu Dao also has ties in the Earth Kingdom, being the first of the Fire Nation's colonies. It is also the main scene for The Promise comic and plays small parts in The Search and The Rift comics.
Before the Fire Nation invaded, Yu Dao was nothing but a small Earth Kingdom village. In fact, Yu Dao is old! Like really old. So old that that Avatar Kyoshi's bodyguard, Rangi had visited it sometime before 296 BG. And many hundreds of years later when Fire Lord Sozin attacks the earth kingdom, the Fire Naton Citizens (the first of the Fire Nation Colonies) moved into the town.
Together with all the Earth Kingdom citizens who were already there, the Fire Nation Citizens developed one of the best metalworking industries in the world and the tiny village became one of the biggest and most influential cities in the world.
In 100 AG, Zuko and Kuei try to give back all of the Earth Kingdom colonies in the "goofily named" Harmony restoration movement, Yu Dao and the other oldest colonies prove to be a huge problem. The Fire Nation Colonials believe that they have as much right to the land as the Earth Kingdom Citizens do since they have lived there for hundreds of years.
After the daughter of the Mayor (Kori) raises the point with Zuko, a fight between the Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom begins. Eventually a coalition government is agreed and after The Search comic in The Rift comic the new government is formed including Kori's mother who was voted up.
Yu Dao was located in a wide, flat valley which was bounded by rocky terrain on all sides. The city was enclosed by a sandstone wall with one opening which served as the gateway to the city. Yu Dao's streets were lined by predominantly low rise buildings which were built in a unique style that combined Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation architecture. The city was very compacted as the surrounding terrain limited Yu Dao's building space.
A wide, central pathway ran from Yu Dao's gate to the back of the city. The avenue served as the main thoroughfare of the metropolis, and many smaller streets branched off of it. There was also a canal that ran through the city.
