Implant technology, also considered, 'embedded' technology, can be put directly into the human body (Kender, 2014). Instead of a machine or physical piece of technology, the technology is within you and uses your body as a host. Once seen as a futuristic and unaobtainable phenomenon is now has a very realistic future.
"The medical field has fast taken to microchip implants, ultra-slim and flexible digital tags that can, for example, control a prosthetic limb. Such technology can also monitor the movements of Parkinson’s patients using accelerometers to detect tremors, which offers neurologists a detailed assessment of a patient’s physical behavior before they visit for their next appointment, aiding in the selection of appropriate doses of medicine" (Rosen, 2022).
Pacemaker
"A pacemaker insertion is the implantation of a small electronic device that is usually placed in the chest (just below the collarbone) to help regulate slow electrical problems with the heart. A pacemaker may be recommended toensure that the heartbeat does not slow to a dangerously low rate." (John Hopkins Medicine, 2022).
Cochlear Implant
Aiding those who are deaf or hard of hearing, a Cochlear Implant is a small electronic device that effects the cochlear nerve. Although the system has a device that is internal and external, it's system runs directly through small electrodes that connect to the cochlear nerve (John Hopkins Medicine, 2022). It is important not to confuse a Cochlear Implant as a hearing aid, as it is a system that allows for better speech understanding compared to louder noises (John Hopkins Medicine, 2022).
Animal Microchips
Although the microchip is not passive, meaning that it store no active information, it is still considered an implanted piece of technology (Hunter, n.d). Therefore, the microchip can not be actively tracked down, although, it does store a permament set of information if it were to be scanned in the case of a lost pet. Typically, the microchip is inserted through a needle near the spine of the animal, in this case a dog (Hunter, n.d).
