Your pledge is a public declaration of your intent as you embark on your Hordweard journey. Your pledge might take the form of a verbal statement, a written promise and/or a valuable object to contribute to the Hordweard. Your pledge must be of significant value to the participant, whether this significance is monetary, sentimental or time spent, to make the Hoard a true treasure worth striving for.
At the beginning of the Hordweard, I will confess that I did not wholly understand the nature of this pledge. Fearing the scrutiny of my companions and the revelation of my ignorance, I decided to enter a silent pledge on a piece of paper. This pledge did read something along the lines of ...
... and so my journey begins.
I also included a small Hedeby bag that I was gifted by the Baron and Baroness of Mordenvale in recognition of my contribution to the Arts and Sciences. I do believe that it will find a worthy home amongst the horde.
(The amazing construction and embroidery featured on this item is attributed to the craftsmanship of Bjorn Saemundarson.)
As a craftsman, the journey is the meat of the Hordweard - the many steps you take over the course of the year towards fulfilling your pledge. Learning new skills, problem solving, and living the life of a craftsman in your pursuit of knowledge. I will be actively exploring and living the life of a Norwegian women in the 9th Century as I learn the ins and outs of Viking Age domestic textile production.

The Hordweard concludes at the annual Thing during Mordenvale's Spring War in 2020. At this Thing, all of the participants who fulfilled their pledge will partake in a presentation of their own journey and a judgement of the other entries. Entries will be judged by the depth and breadth of the new dark age skills acquired over the year as evidenced by their entry and the journey that they have chronicled. This will be the site of my Chronicle.
