During my pre-service student at USANT Junior High School, I had the opportunity to work with Sir Bobby as my cooperating teacher. He served as the advisor of 9 Dao and teaches English to Grade 9 Students.
Teaching Method
During my observation at USANT Junior High School, I noticed that Sir Bobby frequently employs a learner-centered approach and a constructivist approach in his classes. This means he focuses on the needs and interests of his students, encouraging them to take an active role in their learning process. Instead of merely lecturing, he facilitates discussions and engages students in hands-on activities that promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills. He creates a classroom environment where students feel empowered to express their thoughts and ask questions. This approach helps students construct their own understanding of the subject matter, leading to deeper retention and comprehension. But according to Sir Bobby, with a diverse range of learners in each class, teachers are encouraged to explore and implement various teaching methodologies and strategies. They can choose to conduct activities such as buzz sessions, group work, individual tasks, and peer teaching whenever they deem it suitable.
Learning Materials and Innovation
In terms of English learning materials, the school utilizes several resources, including Magica (Journal), the SRA Reading Laboratory, and a textbook. The teachers also harness the power of the internet to find relevant materials available online.
Sources of Learning and Technology
The lessons are consistently anchored on the Most Essential Competencies of the K to 12 Curriculum. In teaching, they incorporate the use of projectors and laptops to integrate technology effectively and enhance lesson delivery to students. For speaking or speech activities, they utilize a Public Speaking Room and a Multimedia Room to conduct related classes. Additionally, they have a Learning Management System (LMS) where quizzes, learning materials, references, activities, projects, assignments, and similar resources are posted, allowing both students and their parents to monitor student performance.
Authentic Assessment
The teachers are giving students projects where they can showcase their skills. At the end of every quarter, they are asking the students to submit a portfolio of their learning and experiences throughout the specific quarter.
