If you have already worked on fuel reduction and have prepared your home in the 0-5 feet zone,
there are still steps you might want to take to make your home safer during Fire Season when you go away for a vacation or a long week-end.
Find 4 important tips below:
Is your house surrounded by a wooden fence?
Is the fence touching the house?
Do you have wooden doors?
If you have no fire break such as an opening or a metal gate between your fence and your house, it is recommended that, when you leave during fire season, you open a wooden gate to offer a fire break. Or you can make sure that a neighbor will open your gate in case of a fire nearby. This is especially important if fences go from one house to another without a break.
Do you have flammable pillows or outdoor furniture?
If there is a risk that embers falling on those can start a fire on your deck, please think about storing flammable outdoor material in your garage before leaving.
Do you have a gas barbecue touching your house or your wooden fence?
Move your gas grill away from the house or the fence when you leave for an extended period of time during fire season.
Do you have crawl space vents?
Bend Fire & Rescue recommends that you close your vents when you leave for an extended time during fire season to avoid embers flying into your house. You can also make sure that the mesh material is metal and is 1/8 of an inch. Most vents in our nieghborhood have 1/4 inch mesh which is big enough to let embers fly in. Don't forget to open the vents when you come back!
