Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to be on site during the risk assessment?
Yes, it is important to be present. The risk assessment has an educational component and you will get a better understanding of why the assessor is recommending certain actions.
Who is doing the assessment and what qualification do they have?
You can request an assessment with Bend Fire & Rescue.
Your Skyliner Summit Firewise Committee has one representative, Laurence Le Mercier, who has attended a 4 hour initial training with Bend Fire & Rescue as well as a 1.5 hour advanced class also with Bend Fire & Rescue in February 2025. This qualifies her to be an assessor for defensible space and home hardening.
Do I have to do all the work that is recommended in the assessment?
The risk assessment will give you recommendations. Of course, for your property's protection as well as for the protection of your neighbors' properties, we encourage you to do as much of the work that is recommended.
Will this assessment be shared with others?
No. The assessment is only for you and will not be shared. You will received the form for your information. With your authorization, the assessor may take a picture of the form to have a copy in case you misplace yours.
By becoming Firewise ( defensible space and home hardening), will this affect my home insurance?
There is no short answer to this. As of the writing of this document, there are some insurances ready to talk about reducing rate if you live in a Firewise neighborhood. Overall though, there are no clear signals that all insurances will recognize Firewise communities. In the meantime, doing the work and encouraging your neighbors to do it too will make us all safer and hopefully in the long run, insurances will take notice.
