In order to gather some research around the topic I am studying, I asked my peers to fill out this survey. This allowed me to analyse their responses and will hopefully let me create a music video that my target audience will enjoy (since my primary audience will most likely be young adults).
After a few weeks of this being live, I got eight total responses. Here is an analysis of each question and what I learned:
This question is to set the basis of my theory. Music videos are meant to be enticing and perhaps to tell the viewer a bit more about a song's story. If the majority of people taking this survey aren't watching them, then that tells me a bit more about whether the next few questions will be fairly answered.
These results told me that the split was about 50/50 for people who watched music videos or did not. This gives me the indication that when someone watches a music video, they are almost always aware of the song before the viewing, meaning that the music video would be heavily influenced by a pre-set viewer bias of what they think the music video should be.
Different music genres evoke different feelings in people, as I discussed in my colour theory subpage, and so finding out what kind of music my target audience listens to might help me not only figure out what music to choose for my final video but also what kind of tone the music video should have.
As you can see, the majority of my target audience listens to dark, dangerous music. Words such as "funky" and "intense" evoke feelings of dark, vivid colours, and perhaps also dark theming as well. By comparison, fewer people showed interest in "upbeat" or "cool" music, which might indicate more bright colours. These are all things I will keep in mind when choosing the final music for my music video.
This question is, obviously, meant to find out whether my target audience even notices whether music videos are using techniques such as colour theory, shape language, pacing, etc. If my target audience doesn't pick up on this, then I will have to keep this in mind when creating my music video and perhaps make it less subtle in order to get my theme across.
Obviously, these results might be a bit biassed since the people taking this survey are mostly art or media students and so more likely to pick up on things like colour theory and tone; however, it seems like the majority of viewers can tell when a music video matches its genre. I will keep this in mind during my production process.
This question is simply to try and find out what kind of music videos my target audience prefers. If they prefer 2D, I will be more inclined to do a 2D animation; if they prefer 3D, then I might reconsider some of my prior research.
As I expected and as I personally agree with, all 8 people who took my survey prefer 2D animation. This is good, as it means I will be able to confidently create a music video using the type of animation that I prefer and am better at. It does mean that I will refrain from using any 3D elements in the final cut of the animation (although using 3D animation as a reference is still fine).
This was a question intended to look into the different kinds of animation styles and which kind my target audience prefers.
The results, as you can see, were extremely varied, and different people like different kinds of animation. The only takeaway from this question was further backing up the idea that 2D animation is more popular than 3D animation and that I will have to figure out my animation style based on the music and my own intuition.
This question is to help me decide what kind of character to design for my music video. I will be creating an original character, so I needed input on what kind of character to design and how detailed I should make that character.
The general consensus was that characters somewhere in the middle of complex and simple are ideal (though one person put their vote in for simple), and I definitely agree with this idea: somewhere in the middle is both engaging to the viewer and easy to see and animate.
