In this course, students research how brands are defining sustainability, implementing solutions, and communicating to their consumers. Students will examine government regulations and certification programs. Case students will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of a brand's sustainable initiatives and communication to end consumers.
GUESS & FIDM are partnering to offer students courses on sustainability for a year with each quarter focusing on a different aspect of sustainability within the fashion industry. Classes are on Wednesdays at 12:00 on the Los Angeles FIDM campus.
Students are currently studying the life cycle of various materials for both raw fibers and final products to determine their impacts on the environment. Also exploring innovations and new technologies in textiles and textile development.
Students created garments using Zero Waste and other sustainable patternmaking methods to create garments that conserve raw materials and reduce waste. GUESS designers visited the classroom to assist in critiques during the development process, and the final designs were presented at GUESS Headquarters.
Spring 2018 Quarter: TSCI 3100 Creative Patternmaking Design
