FAWDON COMMUNITY DAY
WE CELEBRATED OUR COMMUNITY WITH AN EVENT LAST YEAR THAT WE WOULD LIKE TO REPEAT WHEN POSSIBLE
Saturday the 25th of May 2019, 11.00am to 4.30pm.
Food from around the world * Fawdon friendship choir sing at an afternoon tea (with cake - and the Fawdon bake-off!) * Sports demonstrations * films and talks about old Fawdon * Learn to track your family history * Plant stall and gardeners’ question time * Lots for the kids including storytelling and games * young people from Fawdon show the area in film and photos * guided tour of historic local sites.

Fawdon Community Centre (outside)
Go planting (from 11am) - Feel you have a green thumb and want to join and help us? We will be doing some planting in the area beside the shops, outside the Community Centre. Why don’t you join us?
Walk (from 2pm) - “Discover Fawdon” - Starting at the Community Centre, a guided tour, at easy walking pace, led by city guide Colin Tait of the Fawdon, Coxlodge and District History Society, around some of the nearby locations in our area that have shaped our history.
Fawdon Community Centre (hall)
Exhibition (11am - 4.30pm, Hall) - “Fawdon Past and Present”. Visit the exhibition of some of the works our local primary school pupils did from the project Fawdon Past, Present and Future.
Lunch (12 noon - 2pm, Hall) - Come and join us for lunch, a mix of traditional Geordie fare with food from around the world. No charge - but small donation welcomed.
Stalls (12 noon - 2pm, Hall) - Stalls run by the library, the local history society and others plus demonstrations during the lunch
Garden Q&A (12noon – 2pm, Hall) -Have you always wanted to garden but you don’t know where to start from? Have you got a green thumb and wish to share your knowledge with others? Come and share seeds and plants and get the opportunity to seek expert advice from volunteers from Coxlodge Allotments.
Fawdon Memory Wall (from 12 noon, Hall) - Have your say on Fawdon: what do you like? What would you like to see changed? What does Fawdon mean to you? Bring in old photos and other memorabilia that are important for you and reflect your take on Fawdon (past, present and future) or simply come along for a chat with our volunteers.
Fawdon Community Centre (community library room/former cafe)
Storytelling (1-2pm) - Storytelling and workshop for kids - with a chocolate theme, and with lots of goodies from Nestle, our local chocolate factory, for those who take part!
“Go Mining!” workshop (2-3pm) - Workshop for kids. We will build a miner’s cart, using recycled materials. Bring in empty cereal boxes, milk bottle tops and your creativity!
Just who are you? Workshop (3-4pm) - A family history workshop led by local resident Joyce Jackman, who is a family history specialist - how to find out more about your own family’s history and about our area.
St Mary the Virgin Church, Mapledene Road
“Fawdon on camera” Film show (11am-12 noon) - A film-show of photos and film of old Fawdon (up to the 1970s) from the archives, followed by photos and film footage contributed by our local young people with their “take” on Fawdon today. Teas and coffees served all morning
“Our Fawdon” (12 noon - 12.30pm) - Following the photos and films, have YOUR say -what is good about Fawdon today and what needs to improve or change?
Storytelling (11am-12 noon) - Storytelling for kids - with a chocolate theme, and with lots of Nestle goodies, made in our very own local chocolate factory, for those who take part!
“Tales of old Fawdon and Coxlodge” Talk (1- 1.45pm) - An illustrated talk by David Faulkner on the history of Fawdon and Coxlodge and some of the special places, stories and characters from our area.
Fawdon Friendship choir (3-4.30pm) - Come and enjoy afternoon tea and cake on us and be entertained with songs from the Fawdon Friendship choir.
The Great Fawdon “Bake Off” (from 2.30 pm) - Bake us one of your “specials”, your favourite cake that demonstrates your baking or cake decorating skills. With a prize for the winner. Bring it to the church by 2.30pm. The kids can decorate cakes that we will provide - and win prizes too!
